Hey all. Me and a buddy of mine are in the process of cleaning up some of his dad's old rifles, one of them being a 742. The gun looks like it's been run hard and put up wet it's entire life. To the point where the bolt stayed locked back with the mag removed lol. We've got the action cleaned up fairly well and the action seems to move back and forth fairly well but during my research on the gun I've seen ppl saying that the receiver needs grease on the bolt slides and on the bolt itself, as well as the locking lugs. I've never used grease inside or outside any gun before but I've only owned/maintained firearms 5 or 6 years now so I'm still a bit green and I'd like some opinions as the internet can fool me sometimes.

Also I still haven't tackled the gas system yet, any tips?

Thanks for any response including ones telling me to post in a different forum, I'm only half sure this is the right one.

Check the inner rear receiver top for any evidence of the bolt lugs imprinting into the metal. Could be why the bolt stayed back. If that is the case the gun is not worth much more effort than a wipe down. If all is good a Teflon based spray (dri lube) is the best for Remington auto rifles.

Awesome guys thanks for the responses. I have seen some info about the marking/gouging. There's a small amount of it but not as bad as most of the pictures I've seen. Also, for the gas system I've seen ppl say not to take it apart unless I absolutely have to, would you agree with that sentiment for someone who's mechanically inclined?

The gas port and piston are not difficult to take apart. Beware that there is a ball bearing that acts as a metering device in the gas block and it is easy to lose. I would just rinse the port and block with brake cleaner and call it good.

Awesome Darryl thanks for the help. When I have a look at it tomorrow I'll see how everything looks and decide how far I want to go. My buddy told me he's never seen his dad take the rifle down once.
