Ok fellas I was left a Remington 742 woodsmaster in a will recently and my son wants to use the rifle. Upon shooting the rifle it jams...alot....no surprise. I would like to know what is the proper procedure for cleaning this rifle?????/ What I mean is what do I have to take apart to get at the action to clean it. Also....are the magazines for these rifles all the same?? I know the newer versions the magazines are pretty much the same...like a .270 and .30-06 and .308 are the same magazine. The magazine that came with the rifle is a 7MM EXP. Rem. Which I would assume is the now known 7mm rem mag. Anyways answers to these questions or suggestions about how to stop the jamming would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mike

You assumed wrong. The 7mm express is actually the 280rem.When you clean the 742,make sure to keep the area where the gas operates the action oil free or it will gum up badly.

7MM Express is actually the .280 Rem. This rifle was never made in magnum cals.
Gun shops (try LeBaron in Ottawa) sell chamber brushes specifically for this rifle. Try that, and you can try a new mag. as well. You have to clean the bore from the muzzle and remove the forend to access the gas system, IIRC.
Try a search on this site for instructions.
Do you know the pro shop at Stittsville range? The fella there does some gunsmithing, and has a good opinion of the so-called "Jam-a-matic". He could certainly tell you what to clean and how. And likely for free. Hope this helps. Is your rifle in .280? I always wanted one to go with my .280 bolt gun!
BTW, I'm in C.P.!

You should take it to a gunsmith and have it inspected and cleaned.... get him to check the rails for wear.
If you are going to do it yourself you should have a really good look at the inside of the reciever for wear.
