I need your help.

I have a Remington 742 and I am mounting a scope to. The rifle has a weaver base and an older weaver scope and rings of unknown brand.

However with all mounted it does not seem that the scope is anywhere near lignment with the barrel.

I know I cna get wwindage adjustable rings, however, I am curious, is it normal for such to be misaligned? I believe the holes were factory drilled & tapped.

Thanks,

FW

... it does not seem that the scope is anywhere near alignment with the barrel.

Can you elaborate on the alignment?

~~~~~~~~
The scope should be mounted directly over the bore, though there are variations. If the scope is parallel with the bore you should be fine. If the scope is not parallel, there might be a problem.
The correct Weaver base is a #62, and the base should be marked so on top.
Make sure the rings are identical and not mismatched.
Make sure that each ring is installed the same way.
i've got a 742, and you SHOULDN'T need windage adjustable rings- i would try different rings, or maybe the SCOPE BODY IS WARPED- or the cross-bolt isn't sitting in the groove properly - the last place i'd look is to the rifle; btw, PICTURES would help ; if you're just talking about aligning the crosshairs with the point of impact, that's what the internals on the scope are for, and you can't find that out until you've shot a few rounds
Thanks for the replies.
I will eloborate.
I have NOT shot a single round through this rifle. I do not have any boresighting equipment. I am commenting on the rifle with weaver base (looks like #62 to me, seems to fit well and properly...no funny gaps or anything), unknown rings and weaver scope as it was handed to me. I was told that it wasn't sighted in and the scope was only put in the rings to keep it all together.
Open sights are still on the rifle. I have looked at the scope in the rings and both rings are on the same way, the gap on the rings seems equal, the rings seem to be properly on the weaver base, square to the base and all.
When I look through the scope the front sight (of the open sights) is nowhere near the vertical cross hair. It is far out in the left quadrant. I tried adjusting the internal windage to bring the cross hair so it is nearer the blade and, no dice. I then looked at the scope from the top and it does NOT seem o be parallel with the barrel/bore, it seems to be pointed off to the right.
I am new to scopes setup, always using open sights in the past or rifles that have already been setup/sighted in by another person.
Thanks,
Don't rely on the front sight too much. I would have the rifle boresighted. Issues should show up at that time. If there is an issue, adjustable windage rings should take care of the parallel problem.
i'd take it to a smith- you're going to need it boresighted anyway, and he'll be able to deduce wtf is wrong with the mount as well- save you a lot of time and grief- it's a 742, so you'll need at least a boresighter with arbors or a magnetic one, and you don't know if the scope is any good anyway- it is possible that the scope itself has problems
All figured out, there was no problems other than my own perception. Smith checked out the mounts, loctited the bases and boresighted. I sighted in on Sunday...I'm ready for moose season. Thanks for all of the replies.
