Remington 742

A friend of mine loaded his 742 a few days back, put the magazine in, pulled the cocking handle and let it go ahead... the rifle fired. Further inspection showed that the cartridges he had been using this fall had tiny dents in the primers.
Firing pin spring gotten weak ?

It could be the return spring or the firing pin. In either case the rifle must be disassembled and inspected to determine the repair required.
