Remington 760 .308 barrel resize?

It seems that whenever someone is looking for a remington pump they are looking for it in a carbine length vs. the regular length.

Whether I was to keep it or possibly sell it later, does anyone think it would be worth my while to maybe shorten the barrel up a bit? Right now it sits at 21 3/4", but I'm wondering if maybe shortening it up might not be a bad idea. Both my father and I do most of our hunting in heavy stuff anyways, so it would definitely be of benefit that way.

I'm also planning on getting a recoil pad fitted, so, in a sense I'm thinking of making this gun into a little bit of a project. It belonged to my grandfather, who, to the best of our knowledge, never bagged anything with it. We're thinking that maybe we should at least try and break it in a little.

We have a couple of guys in our camp that turned their full length 760's into carbine. You can get the barrel cut and crowned realitively cheap. They make for a quick fast handling gun in the bush. If you do decide to sell, please let me know.

You can certainly have it cut and crowned. Remounting the front sight will add to the cost. From a standpoint of resale down the road, I doubt if you would ever recover the cost of having this done professionally.

The carbines handle far better than the rifles, but a quite loud.

I've got a Carbine as well in .308 and if I had a longer barreled 760/7600 I'd chop it down as well.

Well - The rifle is in good enough shape to be considered a collectible to some folks - if not now, then a few years down the road. The mods you describe will destroy that collectibility. My two cents...

I bought a .35 whelen of Supercub, I am going to get it cut to 18.5" end of this month great gun with open sights.

My dad managed to engrave my grandfather's name into a couple of his guns.

Thankfully he stopped when it came to his guns...

In honour of your grandfather, I would leave the gun just the way it is. When you harvest an animal with that rifle, I'm sure he will be smiling down on you!

Over the years I've owned both the carbine & rifle versions of the 760/7600 ... and have hunted the typical bush of the Muskoka/Parry Sound Districts. Prefer and now have the rifle version ... in a 35 Whelen -7600. Just don't see a reduction of 3-1/2 " to be of any real consequence to me.

Grandpa's rifle ... I'd leave it alone. As you say, it seemed to work for him !
