First off, legal? I can probably answer this with a measuring tape. Also... is there any point?

My grandfather gave me his Leupold scoped 30-06 Gamemaster a while back. I have not shot it as of yet. I want to keep it, but I do not want to use it as my main hunting rifle. ( I am partial to bolt action ) So I had this idea to use it as a "secondary" rifle when hunting. I know it sounds like a dumb ass idea, but it makes some sense... to me anyway. I am considering removing the scope and attaching an aperture or ghost ring sight. Then replacing the butt stock with a folding one. Since the Gamemaster is plenty light and the combination of a folding stock for a marginal gain fin compactness will make carrying it around manageable. I was thinking of putting one of these back pack style slings on it as well. So when the bush gets thick and a scope is useless for quick target acquisition. I switch over to my Gamemaster. Just an idea, don't know if it is even practical.

any insight?

I don't have any strong positive or negative opinions about your project, but I do think the 7600/760's are very practical hunting guns. I believe that any aftermarket stock that works with 20gauge Remington 870's will also fit these rifles, so you should be able to find something you like.

Well, I decided to keep it as is. It is perfectly fine rifle. Just as with most bad ideas, easy come easy go. I think I will buy a newer 7600 and bastardize it.

It could be done without any changes to the rifle. You'd need to buy a single point sling adapter that fits on an 870 receiver. Then you would need to file and grind down the adapters male end to fit the slightly smaller 760 receiver. Once the adapter has been modified you could use any 870 stock you want on your 760.
