I am cleaning and looking over a very close friends remington 760. She has stated it does not lock up proper, and yes there is a problem.
On inspection I notice the action bar lock is worn where it engages the action bar, making true engagement a 50/50 proposition. Brownells shows there are none in stock, however it looks like one from a 7600 will fit by the pictures, but not a forsure. If the rod was upwards more it would engage properly. Here are my thoughts.
1. I could try to build up the tip of the lock using very fine tig. I am an experienced welder with access to the equipment, but this is fine enough to give me the heebie jeebies. Would be a fixed or fooked proposition.
2. The lock is streight where it comes out of the trigger assembly. A slight bend upward would increase the engagement area with the action bar. If I do this I may have to stone on a slightly different angle to match the new fit.
3. Of course always looking for a new one, going to a gun show next weekend. My chances are less than bright on finding one. I hesitate to get a used one lest it has the same problem. I could order one from a 7600 from brownells and hope, but its an expensive and long lead time for a maybe.
I am basically looking for advice on what to do from those with more experience inside one of these. The rifle has wear, but it has been her baby for a long time and want to make it right for her again!
