I see Remington has a combo rifle/ scope in their line of rifles. The 770 is a centrefire rifle with a composite stock , detachable magazine and comes with a sope mounted. Mind you the scope has absolutely no markings or identification on it. The kicker is that it sells for around $350.00 and even less. Now what kind of combo sells for that price? Methinks I would be somewhat skeptical of this. Any comments and opinions?

Don't bother. If your on a budget, a Stevens, Savage, Rem 700 SPS would be much better choices, even if they cost a few bucks more.

You are right, you should be sceptical. The 770 is a cosmetic treatment and renaming of the 710 which was intended to compete with Savage's package rifles that were recruiting lots of new shooters to that brand. The 710 was a good idea but it wasn't well executed and Savage's package rifles and their Stevens 200 were and are just better value for the money.

The unmarked scope on all these package rifles are typically Bushnell, Tasco, or Simmons models from the low end of their price ranges where quality isn't the main feature.

Personally I would go with a Savage or Stevens rifle combo like other mentioned. The 770 (and earlier 710) have a few flaws that can be a problem. (I think the magazine catch was plastic and could/would fail but dont hold me to it).

However a buddy of mine has one and loves it, it is the first sub MOA rifle he owned. In fact he has had much better accuracy with it than several other Remington 700's he has owned.

Like others have said, the scope with any combo gun (Rem or Savage) are usually crap. Plan to upgrade it but at least you have rings and bases.

Go with the Savage Edge/Axis and cut the spring on the trigger. My 22-250 is deadly accurate. I think I paid $360 taxes in for it and the scope.

If you are looking to just throw a few hundred bucks in the garbage, I'll PM you my address and you can mail it to me. If not, go with the Savage Axis combo.

Savage package rifle [rifle & scope combo].

Or Stevens 200 & scope it your self.

I'd take any of the above long before I'd have a Rem 770.

My .02

I am a Remington fan, but they missed the boat with this rifle/combo.
While any I have shot were quite accurate, they are an ergonomic disaster, and have had many issues.
Others have made good suggestions.
For the extra dollars, the SPS is so much better.
Savage makes some better combos for very little extra.
Eagleye.

bought an savage edge 270 nothing special but at 315.00 what do you want ...havnt loaded for it yet ...1 1/2 out of the box with rem ammo.... changed the scope and went hunting for the money you just cant beat it

GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! i seen one at crappy tire and thats where it shall stay.

so much plastic on the gun you would think its made 100% from recycled water bottles.

I would even be ashamed to have one in my safe let alone in my name for the registery.

heck i wouldn't register it just for the fact that i could claim i stole and but feeling ashamed and give it back to the police when they ask about it :D

i feel a dead deer desires better then a 770 in a photo session.

Don't walk away from the deal.. RUN!

I have a 770 in .308. Shoots 150 gr. federal blue box and 180 gr. rem core lokts into an inch at a hundred yds. I've had it a while and so far, 3 shots, 3 deer.

Yes, lots of them work fine, but that's pretty much what you can expect from a Stevens 200, Savage 11/111 package rifle, and more recently the Marlin XS/XL7s. Compared to those, too many 710s and 770s had defects to stand up to comparison. And because of that, they tend to get less of your money back if you decide to sell.

As you seem to have a good one, the best thing you can do is keep it and use it.

I had the camo version of the 770 Sportsman. I bought mine the first year they came out for around $600 (after the $40 mail in rebate). The very next year the price was down to about $420 for the same gun. It is was a piece of garbage. The bolt was a little sticky when I bought it, but thought a little lube would help. Never did get any better. Total junk. Run away, run far away from the Sportsman!
