Anybody have some feedback about these rifles? WSS has them on sale for $365 and Remington has a $40 rebate so they are pretty inexpensive.

I've read of stiff bolt lift, bolt handles breaking off and major feeding issues on some rifles. Are these issues anomalies or are they fairly frequent? Are they worth buying or not worth the risk?

I would not recommend one. i have handled them and they feel cheap. I Have heard of those issues as well. These models that come with the scope as well are equipped with a no name brand scope, not good for anything other than a .22 cal.

The rifle is an entry rifle that is built as cheap as possible, it has no real quality, but it will work, just don't expect amazement out of it. Thats why its dirt cheap.

For a cheap rifle, i would recommend the Savage Axis 2 over this Remington any day.

I've got one in 270.
The rifle is probably the best "budget" rifle I have used. I do like it much much more then the axis. I've had no issues with feeding and the bolt on mine is really smooth.
It's turned out to be more accurate then I am so I'm happy with it for what I use it for. Trigger is amazing for a rifle at that price point.

As far as the optics that come with them in the package. Total crap. The lens fell out on the 4th shot while sighting it in. Remington sent me a new one, and when it came in the mail, it got delegated to the parts drawer. Plan to buy another optic for it.

Obviously there are better rifles, but for the price, I don't think you can beat it. Accurate with a nice trigger and smooth bolt.. what else can you ask for.

Best of the sub $400 budget rifles for sure. Have 2, a 30'06 and a 7mm mag. Trigger is way better then the Axis, stock is really stiff with no flex, action on both mine are very smooth and cocking effort is very easy, has a faster lock time then a Rem 700 which is one of the faster lock production rifles out there, both are very accurate. Mags are $30 at wolverine if you need spare and are much better then axis mags.
Way better gun then the Axis I have.

Have a look at the information about the 783 by Mystic Precision. He feels it has potential.

Personally, I'd buy a used Parker Hale or Husky and have something you could hand down to somebody. I realize they are a bit more but not much. Top that with a good used scope and you could have a sweet combo under 600. Keep an eye out for good deals - I found an old Redfield 2-7 power in a bargain bin at a gun shop locally for 20 bucks and it is very clear.

Very accurate out of the box, great new receiver design, stock isn't the best but still ok and for $300 ish you can't beat them! Buy a couple! Yes check out the thread in precision rifles about them!

Its a good rifle. Mine was kind of rough to cycle at first. Way better stock than the sps if kind of ugly. Very good trigger. Good magazine and latch system. Sometimes mine wont pick up the first round if it sits a bit crooked in the mag you have to load it properly. Still easier to load properly than my 700's. Its not a lightweight, a plus in my books.

I just bought one in 22-250 and love it. I sold my axis to buy it and I don't reget it at all... The savage was not a good "feeling" rifle, this thing is awesome. Bought it Friday and have already put 40 rounds thru it. I did change out the scope for a Bushnell, made 1 adjustment and already am grouping a loonie size at 150 yards. Cant wait to take it to the range...

Agreed that every hunter needs at least one nice PH or sported Enfield/Mauser, but you're not comparing apples to apples. OP is talking $350 plastic truck gun not heirloom firearms.

Also, it's a pretty rare PH that will print the kind of groups a modern CNC gun will. Especially in the varmint calibers.

;)

I have sold a ton of these, no complaints.

My hunting buddy has one of them, the compact model in 243.

The finish is rough. The bolt is no worse or more sloppy than any other sub-500 dollar rifle on the market and it's miles ahead of the Axis factory trigger.

He has had no feed problems. It is accurate right out of the box.

Yes, the stock is cheap but so is the stock on a $900 Rem 700 SPS.

I personally prefer to spend more money on a better finished rifle (note I didn't say more accurate).

If I had a need for a specific caliber for a specific need that would be a "once in a while need" I would consider a 783.

If I only hunted deer for one week during the gun season with a few buddies and the rifle would sit (trigger locked) in closet for the rest of the year I would strongly consider the 783 (over an Axis, Patriot or even an American).

If I had limited cash flow and my only other option was "not buy anything" for many years until I could afford something better, I would absolutely buy a 783.

And in particular, if my funds were limited I might feel more confident about buying a new rifle than a used one, especially if it was my first/only rifle. You might make out perfect with a used gun or you might simply be buying someone else's problem that they dumped - it would really depend on the circumstances - but buying from "some guy" who drops it in the mail many provinces away, may not be the best "first purchase" option.

So if any of those circumstances applied "to me", I would consider the 783 a "viable option" that wouldn't break the bank even if you have a "really small bank".

It's a race to the bottom. Given Remington quality as of late I wouldn't want their basic entry level rifle even if it's a mix of better brands achievements.
It is better looking than the axis but then again a shaved baboon walking backwards looks better than the axis

I support entry level guns for the simple fact they allow those of less means to acquire firearms. The more ppl who own them the better off we are all. I have my personal views but I won't look down on someone who shoots a budget priced gun. Wish they'd bring back the Stevens 200 myself
