I have a very nice remington 788 in 308-wondering if it could be rebarreled with a 358 with a stock barrel,or would gunsmithing be involved, negating the practicality of it.I am simply interested in a larger diameter bore for moose hunting
Yes, you'll need a smithy unless you have the tools and skills to change the barrel. If you can find a barrel. Mind you, the .308 will drop a moose with no fuss. 165 grain hunting bullets will do nicely.
788s were never available from the factory with a 358 barrel, so you will be dealing with gunsmiths. You can put a new barrel on and have it chambered to 358, or you can rebore the existing barrel and have it rechambered for 358. - dan
