Remington 788 magazine spring

No idea. You just lost the spring? Its gonna be easier ($$$) to just buy a mag.

I wish the aftermarket made 10 rounders for these things.

Borrow an original magazine spring from a mate, very easy to take out and replace. And take it to a spring manufacturer to copy, 10 minute job at the right place. Then return borrowed spring to mate.

Simply Springs Ltd, Hasting New Zealand. Message these guys, amazing service. Give them your spring measurements and ask for slightly stronger cos the original 788 springs are a bit anaemic. Then have them post it to you as a "lifter spring". If they need a spring to copy let me know and I can send them one of mine.

I had a 788 in .223, it was the definition of feeding issues. I bought a brand new take off bottom metal with the follower spring hinged floor plate off of a guy who was putting his new rifle in a chassis with a magazine system. It fit perfectly with minor modifications to my stock; feeding issues persisted.

That rifle was very accurate, but the feeding issues pissed me so off that I sent it down the road with full disclosure.

A certain American gun parts seller has the mag for just over $40 USD. Probably not going to get any easier than that.

788's don't have bottom metal with a spring hinged floor plate. They've always been single stack mag fed rifles. - dan

Yes, mine was that way originally, I installed a new, take off, as I posted above: " It fit perfectly with minor modifications to my stock; feeding issues persisted."
Blind magazine or brand factory new bottom metal with hinged floor plate, follower, spring all original to the bottom metal, feeding was still piss-poor.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of a 700? There was never a bottom metal setup for the 788 which used a hinged floorplate, nor a blind magazine version.
The detachable 788 magazine latches to an L shaped bracket screwed to the receiver. The magazine catch is part of the magazine.

Sorry, a bit of a brain fart; my rifle was a model 78, not a 788, the bottom metal came off of a model 700.

I would expect the spring and follower to be different in a magazine that it was in either the ADL of BDL type setups.

Yes, from a model 700. They were, for the most part identical to the ADL, just not finished quite as nice, and in a hardwood (birch?) stock. I think mine would have maybe been built in the early 80s. It shot well, just did not feed.

I've owned a half dozen 78's. Still have a couple. As long as they had the correct spring and follower, I never had an issue with them. Maybe someone messed around with it before you got it. - dan

Yes, I thought of that, which is why I went with the new 700 bottom metal assembly. No difference. If that rifle had fed properly, I would still have it. But in all honesty, going back to the 6.5 x 55 se in a new Zastava rifle, gives both the accuracy and reliability I want in a rifle.

What we really need is 5 round aftermarket mags for these.

I’ll take 2!

I actually bought a second mag with plans of joining them together but never got around to it. Handy having a second
