I was wondering if its possible to buy a 20 guage barrel for a Remington 870 12 guage. I know the 20 guage shells wont probally work in the 12 guage mag tube but will the fireing pin and extractor work properly? Will the 20 guage barrel fit over the 12 guage mag tube or are they totally different guns?

I know there are over and under different caliber switch barrels wonder if this is possible on a pump gun.

it is not possible. I have a 20ga 870 every part is dimensially scaled down. Therefore the 20ga barrel would not fit into the gun it would be loose and not lock in place. and the 12ga bolt would not be able to lock into the 20ga barrel either as it is much bigger.

The older Wingmaster Magnum 20ga 870s were built on the same frame as the 12ga. I am not an expert but perhaps changing the bolt(with extractor, 20ga is smaller than 12ga), barrel and mag tube could work. The mag tubes of these older Wingmaster Magnum 20ga is the exact same in outer diameter and cap thread of all the 12ga 870s I have. Old 2 3/4" and recent 3". Not sure about the internal diameter of the mag tube, I should check.

All I know is that I bought a rather recent 20ga 870 Imp Cyl 20" slug barrel and it would not fit. Mag tube ring on the barrel is way to small.

Ok thanks guys I figured this would be case... I want to experiment with 20 guage hand loaded slugs, in comparison to 12 guage handloaded slugs and hoped it was possible to do so without buying a second gun.

For any of you guys with 20 guage guns could you do me a favour and measure the diameter of a fired shell and if you would have a normal trap wad what the inside dimention of the trap wad is when its placed inside the shell.

I'm no expert either but know if your gun is one of the early 20ga wingmasters it will have a X or N in the serial number at the end which designates it was built on the old 12ga frame. They were last produced in the late 70's. The newer 20ga barrels will not fit as you know and it is very hard to find large frame 20 ga barrels, when you do they are expensive like 400.00 used.
Quick way to tell is if a quarter will go through the barrel ring you have an old 12ga frame one converted to 20ga if not a current 20ga later barrel set up. I have at least two of these old frames 12 ga to 20ga in my herd.
Still a good gun just heavier and harder to find a barrel for. Also didnot have to be a mag 3" receiver to get this 12 / 20 conversion, many standard 12ga 2 3/4 receivers were used also.
