Looking for a home defend shotgun, right now there are two different one just in my mind and they are:

1. Remington 870 Express Synthetic 18"
2. Winchester 1300 Defender 18'' with synthetic stock

Just wondering which one is better for HD regarding the reliability, quality etc. Also, which shell would be the right choice, 2-3/4" or 3"? Thank you!

My 870 Express has an 18-1/8" barrel, a two-shot extension, and fires both 2-3/4" and 3" shells. The gun is as reliable as they come, simple to operate and clean, and parts are very commonly available.

Add to that the Remington 870 has more accessories available for it than any other shotgun around.

My shotgun cost me 399.00 at Ellwood Epps, and that was with the extension and black synthetic furniture and an R3 recoil pad, too.

Versatile, affordable and easy to use, just point and boom.

I am sure the winchester is a good gun too, but this is why I went with the 870. Either way, welcome to shotgunning.

I have the Winchester Defender: Black, 18" barrel, 8 shots, Tru-Glo sights, neoprene sling. Don't have pistol grip - tho some nifty tactical upgrades are available online.
Shoots 2 3/4 & 3" magnum.
Whichever you decide between Winchester & Remington, you can't go wrong.

Winchester calls it Speed-Pump, or inertia-assisted pumping. "The rotary bolt disengages seconds after the shell fires. The bolt is forced rearward by inertia, actually assisting as you pump the forearm rearward for the next shot."

FWIW, I've got both the 870 and the 1300, and I prefer the action on the 870 hands down. Handle both and choose whatever feels nicer to you.

Practice hammering the action with it on your shoulder etc.

Also, with regards to the inertia pump on the 1300.
It doesn't seem to make any difference with bird shot, but with a 3" slug or magnum load it will almost throw the pump completely rearward.

win1300 / rem 870

I had a 1300 and it worked fine but it had an alloy receiver, which after a 1000 or so rounds i noticed a little wear, where the barrel contacts the receiver. The rem 870 has a steel receiver and i havent noticed any wear on mine in this area. Have a good one.

winchester is s**t
try putting 20,000 rds in a winchester and see what happens
get the 870.
bbb

Don't hold back... tell us how you really feel... :runaway:

I was looking for a compact wilderness carry rig and while the Winchester looked good with a fiber optic sight and all, I decided to get a Remington because they are still making them.

Now I just need to get a shorter barrel for it (came with a 28"). Likely a short Dlask barrel.

How much are the Dlask barrels anyways?

I have the 870 18" (not 18 1/2") with a 7 -shot...how come some 870s are 18 1/2 and some are just 18?
I love it.

I just paid $299.00 for a 14". I think the 12" is the same price.
Wow! I didn't think they would be that much... I guess there must be a good demand for them right now to price them that high.

Yep, they're both the same price. Apparently a 1-1/2" difference doesn't matter...
By my math 14-12=2 inches... where did I go wrong?

How short can I go while staying non-restricted with the factory stock? Must be a big flame from some of those short barrels? :)

Maybe a 18" with the pistol grip would be a more economical way to go. Hmmm.

Remington hates Canada, go Mossberg. :D

If's it's good enough for the US ARMY, it's good enough for me...especially as a pure home defence shotgun.

The general Mossberg 500 can be had cheaply too. Then again....so can a Winchester1300 defender as well as a Rem 870 express.
