Remington 870 2 3/4 and 3" port sizes

You have to move something,(ejector?) It's not a big job, but they have to move a rivet in the side of the receiver and if you don't re finish it, it sticks out like a sore thumb. And of course you need a barrel.

Since the port on a 2 3/4 inch is the same dimension as a 3" Mag, can a 3" mag be fired from a 50 year old Remington 870 in the 3" Magnum barrel?

Contact Remington with your serial number. They will advise if the receiver can handle it.

It's a toll free number and they answer fairly quickly.

I had my old (mid 60s) Wingmaster converted to fire 3s. I had already replaced the barrel with a newer one that would fire steel and had Remchoke. I took it to the gunsmith and he put in the 3" ejector and refinished the receiver. Now it is a goose smacking machine with synthetic stocks, a tru glo front bead and a Wad Wizard choke.

handle what exactly? the receiver dimensions are identical. port size is identical. ejector rivets are in the exact same place. of course Remington will tell you different because they want you to rush out and buy the latest Supermag. in an 870 the bolt locks into the barrel, and the only thing the receiver does is hold all the junk together.

only thing that changed between the 2 3/4" receiver and the 3" receiver is the ejector. the hook in the newer ejector spring is a bit further back, and the tiny fixed ejector blade of the ejector (what my ruler is resting against) is also correspondingly further back. you could replace the ejector spring with the current version for a couple bucks, and either replace the ejector or simply machine the thin fixed blade further back to match and you have yourself a 3" receiver.

here is a photo i took showing the difference:

the scale bwteen the two pics is slightly different because i didnt use a tripod.

I have a gun ejector spring replaced for this exact reason. Wayne Hendry is the gun smith that did it ( He's in Ontario). He cuts the head off the small rivet inside the gun and I think he drills and taps it after. He then installs the new spring and threads in a new rivet and peens it down. The beauty of this install is that it has no effect on the external finish of the larger rivet head on the outside of the gun. It took him 20 min. and you would never know it was done.

I have the same delima. I am in SE Ont, below Ottawa. Is there a gunsmith close that can do that. I love the OLd Wingmaster, have two other guns in 3". I hate to have to juggle shells all the time. I know that 2 3/4 kills geese fine, but I am toying with the 3" option. If any one know's of a smith, that would rock.

note that its not JUST an ejector spring replacement: in the pic you see i rested a ruler against a fixed ejector blade that forms the upper edge of the ejector. that also need to be machined further back or, more simply, the ejector itself needs to be replaced. note how on the longer ejector spring, the little blade is also at the further back position.
