I was thinking about buying an 870 20 gauge for some small game hunting, I was just wondering what the thoughts were on this gun, or is there a better 20 gauge that would be recommended for the same price.
thanks
Ed

Great idea.

I bought an Ithaca Model 37 20 gauge last year and an 870 12 gauge.

The Ithaca was such a sweet little gun it begged me to take her home, but next choice would be the 870, specially the small framed verison.

My 20 870 Wingmaster is my favourite hunting gun.

Even when hunting big game, it is in the back of the truck, ready to go in case a partridge pops out.

When taking time off from serious moose hunting to walk for partridge, I keep a few slugs with me, just in case I come across something larger.

The 870 is a well made shotgun, and a 20ga is nice for game birds. Use a Modified choke for closer shots, unless you're hunting squrrels in high trees, then use the Full choke. I'll use my 410ga if I hunt rabbits and birds in a tight area where it'll be close shots, because I found even the 20ga to hit them too hard for the cooking pot. Shot sizes I like are #5 and #6. #4 are good for close shots (less shot in the pattern = less in the meat).

I have an 870 in 20 ga and love it. It has screw in chokes (it came with one modified) and the gun works great, very easy to use. I have a beretta O/U and sometimes I just as soon carry the 870.

If you get one, get the new laminate stock. Here's mine, 20" slug barrel, 28" Rem-choke barrel.

The 20 gauge Wingmaster or Express are very versatile guns. Lighter than the 12 for hunting in the uplands, suitable for ducks with 3" magnums and with a slug barrel would be just fine for hunting deer in shotgun only seasons.

At the recent lloydminster gun show I was looking for a lightweight 20 or 28ga. shotgun. To my pleasure I came across an as new 870 wingmaster upland special in 20ga. with english stock, 21"bbl and remchokes. Havent shot it yet but it fits me very well and is extremely light. It will definitely see lots of use over my springer this coming fall!

I think it would be a wise investment. I was just pondering that same thought yesterday, whether or not to add a 20 gauge 870 to my safe. I think it would be great to have around when the kids start to pop out, or if the wife want's to come and play.

Try and find a wingmaster in small frame, the wingmaster is a much nicer gun than the Express model, I might part with this one its a 10 condition

Absolutely. I recently parted with a 20 gauge small-frame Wingmaster that looked much like one above. It was surplus to my needs and I'd acquired a 28 gauge Wingmaster instead.:dancingbanana:
