hey im thinking about getting my first shot gun... and i have been looking at a few (mostly diffrent versions of the 870's and 590's) but i have been thinking about the 870 express super magnum but i have a few questions...

i have heard that if you get a 3.5 inch chamberd shotgun it can have some problems cycling 2.75 inch rounds?....

they say that some of the parts on the express super magnum will not interchange with "regular" 870's, what parts will that be? if i put a regular barrel on it would it still work but not be able to fire 3.5 inch rounds? or will nothing fit? i would like to be able to put a 18 inch barrel on it if i ever feel like it... ooo and i would maybe like to put a mag extention on it, im 99% sure that will fit but i might as well ask...

is there any other shotguns i should look in to? my price range is about 500 bucks, and im mostly gonna be using it for trap shooting and bear defence (hope ill never have to...) when i go out in the bush... (and shooting random stuff like water jugs and stuff to watch it blow up lol...)

I have a 870 Express SM. Bought it back in 1997 when they first came out. Overall, I have been happy with the gun. Very reliable and I rarely clean the it. When you put 3.5 in shells into the gun, you can only get 1 in the chamber and 1 in the mag (assuming you have the plug in), that's why I stick with the 3 in shells so I can get 2 in the mag. I don't shoot 3.5 in shells much, usually 3 in for waterfoul and 2.75 in for upland birds (grouse).

3.5" shells are for bruising your shoulder. They really offer nothing that a 3" shell and a good hunter cant do. And 870 SM do have problems cycling shells.

Stick with the Magnum version.

I used 3.5" shells a few times when duck and goose hunting, but I found the 3" just as good, so I just stick with 3" now. The only time I went with a 3.5" shell was when I was wild turkey hunting.

i think im gonna go with the "870 deer gun" im LOVING the different wood grain patten on it compaired to the regular 870 hardwood... and the 20 inch barrel sounds like the perfect length for starting out with...

dose anyone know if the "IMP" cylinder choke barrel has the "rifle sights" on it or is it the "vent rib barrel"? i would like to get the smooth bore barrel cause i heard that shooting anything other than slugs thru a rifled barrel will damage it?... or is that BS?

It won't damage the barrel, but the shot will spead out way to much because the mass of shot is being rotated as it comes down the barrel.

ok thanks.

just got back from wholesale sparts, put an 870 "deer gun" with shooth bore barrel on order, cant wait to get it :D

I think you made a bad decision. You should of at least got it with a modified choke and at least a 22" to 24" barrel. I fire slugs thru full choke all the time with no issues. The only thing cylinder bore is good for is home defense type of thing. Buddy of mine bought a 20" smooth bore shotgun and he couldn't even kill grouse with it. The only way it would kill a bird was to walk right up on the suckers and shoot them from 10 feet away.

i guess i better work on being more stelthy and sneeking up on birds then :D lol jk....

i thought all 870's had removable chokes in them? it says that this shotgun has a "Rem™ Choke vent rib barrel" on it... cant i just stick a diffrent choke in it? if not i wont cry about it... im not gonna go bird hunting withg it only skeet shhoting and if/when i do go out and do that ill get a longer barrel with some diffrent chokes to try... ill keep this barrel for slugs and bear defence....
