So my buddy and I were at a shop last weekend and he was looking for a 870 for Turkey.. On the back shelf was a 870 express Turkey Camo.. looking at the gun it has a 3 1/2 barrel on it. So he bought it..

Low and behold. the receiver is only a 3" (but it's not marked as such, and you have to dig into the details to find out it's not able to shoot 3 1/2 inch, even though Remington has put a 3 1/2 barrel on it..)

Personally I think this is misleading consumers who "walk up" to find a gun to purchase are misled into thinking it can shoot 3 1/2.

any opinions.

(remember not all people looking for firearms are going to go only to search first, and may not know all the specific details for each gun before they show up at the shop)

Now that doesn't seem right. Why would there be a 3 1/2" barrel on a 3" receiver. Maybe there was a mixup somewhere. Call the dealer, and/or Remington.

Here is mine Rembolt she handles 3 1/2 no problems. I am wonfering if the one he is talking about has the side stamped like this nwtf or just express magnum. Some of those early ones were 3" and someone could have put a 3 1/2" barrel on it. Have to remember if a barrel was ordered as a replacement from remington regardless if you order a 2 3/4" you wilkl get one that handles 3 1/2" I just went through this with remington on a replacement wingmaster barrel.Makes sense for them to stock one barrel to cover all.

Is this the gun . Model 870™ Express® Super Magnum Turkey Camo

it's the "Model 870™ Express® Turkey Camo"

Key Features:

12 gauge, 21" vent-rib bead-sighted barrel
Standard Express finish on barrel and receiver
Supplied with a Turkey Extra Full Rem™ Choke
Synthetic stock with integrated sling swivel attachment
Mossy Oak® Break Up™ camo stock and fore-end

Drilled and tapped receiver for use with Weaver Rail #429M (not included)

but comes with a 3 1/2 inch barrel on it.. so you "Walk up" and it gives you the impression it shoots 3 1/2 shells..

I highly doubt it is false advertising. I could be wrong but if memory serves, all Super Magnum recievers are engraved as such. The standard 3" recievers are plain or engraved with the model (Wingmaster, Express, Deer, Turkey, SPS, etc.). The chamber dimensions are marked on the barrel.

Those barrel markings wouldn't happen to read "12 GA 2 3/4 or 3 INCH" on the top line and then " 3 1/2" ONLY WITH SUPER MAG RECIEVERS" underneath that would they???

I just purchased a new 870 Wingmaster and that is how it's marked as are many other versions I looked at. In my case the reciever is a 3 inch version but the barrel will handle the 3 1/2" shells when fitted to the Super Magnum models as well. It's a cost saving step for Remington...
