I just bought a Remington 870 extended safety from S&J and have no idea how to install it. Can it be done by the user or is that a gunsmith job? I couldn't find a thread about it with the search tool. Thanks for any help.

yup,you can do it yourself.
I think someone said for the j lock you need a new spring or something, but I did mine just fine.

This is for the standard safety and not the J-lock. If it's a J-lock you'll need a replacement detent ball and spring.

Remove the trigger assembly. Directly above the safety you will see a small (about 3/32") pin running horizontally. This pin retains the detent ball and spring for the safety. Use a punch to push this pin out. You will see the vertical hole for them above the pin. Hold your finger over the hole or you may be looking for the spring.

Once the pin is out, remove the spring and detent ball. The safety should now be able to be removed. Insert the extended safety, replace the detent ball and spring and reinsert the pin.

Thanks guys, unfortunately I have a j-lock one, anyone know where the above mentioned detent ball and spring can be found?

I didn't know about schematics on the 870 but I just found it on the remington website...very cool.

I had a j-lock, and needed nothing. Mine was installed just like claybuster said, functions correctly. Took about 5 minutes to install
When I swapped out a J-lock I found the pin and the smaller spring didn't hold the safety firmly in place. I got the replacement parts from Brownells but I believe Western Gun Parts would have them as well.

I'm reporting on what happend with my gun. Your gun might well have been different. I've swapped safeties on several 870s and haven't had one with a J-lock that worked as well with the J-lock parts compared to the original ball and detent. YMMV.
