I was planning on purchasing a Remington Fieldmaster 870 12G Shotgun. My only apprehension is that they come with a plastic trigger assembly which I feel wouldn't be durable enough. I have two questions, Does anyone have an 12G 870 with the plastic trigger assembly and if so how do you like it and do you think it is durable? Second question, does anyone know if the older 870 metal trigger assemblies will fit the newer Fieldmasters. I am aware that Remington discontinued the Express and replaced it with the Fieldmaster because of quality control issues. Any info would be appreciated.

I'd look for an used 3" Wingmaster with tubes.

If you can find an old 870 Special Purpose, it's all Wingmaster with a matte finish.

I recently bought a newly manufactured Fieldmaster. I own an early 2000’s express (which it’s replacing) a pre-bankruptcy Police Magnum, and shot several vintage and newer production Wingmasters. The new Fieldmaster is a great improvement over the express’s we’re all familiar with. Yes it has the polymer trigger guard as opposed to the cast aluminum one found on the WM’s and PM’s. The plastic guard is about the only thing I didn’t have an issue with on that 00’s express I have. Their plastic guards are quite resilient and arguably just as strong if not stronger, than the aluminum.

That new Fieldmaster’s receiver and action are vibrahoned, and finished noticeably better than the express. The receiver to groove is machined in just like the PM’s and WM’s as opposed to being ground flat like on the express. It’s also drilled and tapped for what it’s worth. The finish is also much improved over the express, and based on this years hunting season, much less prone to rust when compared to the express. I would take this Fieldmaster over a late pre-bankruptcy Wingmaster. Obviously, and older Wingmaster in great condition might thought to compare… but none the less it looks like the new/current production is a marked improvement over the recent stuff.

I agree 100+% with what SuperCub suggests...
When I noticed the plastic trigger guard I immediately thought "what if I..."
Changing out parts with 'New Old Stock' would be a lesson in frustration so immediately thought it would be in my best interest to find a lightly used Wingmaster with tubes and barrel configuration I would desire...
A 12, 20 and 410 would be fun to source and with a little bit of self inflicted frustration of searching.
Regards,
Rob

Any 870 trigger group is easily re-configured from plastic to an aluminum unit.
12/16ga
20/28/410

The lifter(key part) is the only piece/part that requires swapping from plastic to aluminum, though the lifter for the plastic trigger group is slightly different than the aluminum unit part....but functions as designed.

12,16,20,410 870's,1100's,1187's in operation for decades w/o issues.
MIM'd extractors are/were swapped out for billet extractors.
