Remington 870 Flex Tab Conversion & Carrier Dog Follower Spring Upgrade

That spring doesn't lift the carrier up. It pushes the carrier down.

I honestly don't know the answer, but I did find this on rem870.com (opinion 2 makes more sense to me, no way that little spring is strong enough to lift that carrier):

Opinion #1:
"...the 870 DOES depend on this spring to bring the shell up. As you you cycle the action to the rear the carrier will lift slightly to cradle the shell as it is released from the magazine. When you cycle forward the action trips the spring and the carrier is snapped up to place the shell in position. Yes, if you slam the action forward it does bring the carrier up faster. However, with the use of this spring you have less chance of a delayed feed due to heavier loads (buck, slug, etc..). The spring has much more tension and will bring the shell in faster. If you have time, watch the carrier as you SLOWLY cycle your EMPTY 870. Hopefully this sheds a little light."

Opinion #2:
"...no force is transmitted through the spring to lift the carrier up. What the spring does is hold the carrier dog against the slide assembly so it can engage, hold the carrier in the “up” position once it’s there, and hold the carrier in the “down” position when the bolt is in battery. A heavier carrier dog follower spring will make the carrier function slightly more reliably, but it will not give it a “stronger lift”, as many seem to mistakenly believe."

I actually put a lighter spring in mine.

The spring that came from the factory was very stiff.
It made the gun quite difficult to quad-load.

A lighter spring made it much easier to push the carrier out of the way.

I haven't noticed any downside to the lighter spring.

Just a quick update:
I received a message from Casey at Tac Ord yesterday. For about $100 + shipping they will machine the bolt and supply a new carrier and slide. The only issue to be resolved is if they can get a polished blue finish carrier.

That's good, hopefully they can find a blued carrier for you, if not the matte finish wouldn't look out of place on your shotgun...

Quite frankly, I don't think I've ever seen a blued elevator. I've only seen matte and chrome on the older guns. That isn't to say they don't exist but I've never happened upon one in the wild.

One of my Wingmaster Magnum's has a blued elevator, but it's not a flex-tab version.

Flex Tab Mod - Update

The parts arrived from TacOrd today;

First time dealing with them, I was impressed with the quick responses to emails, excellent service and very reasonable price.
The final cost was about $142 total. That includes approx. $20 to ship the bolt to TacOrd, $100 fee for parts and labour, GST of about $6 & return shipping of about $16.

The $100 fee included modification of my bolt, and :
• new flex tab slide (Rem Part #: F401023)
• new flex tab carrier (blue finish)
• 1100 carrier latch spring (Rem Part #: F16966) (to upgrade carrier dog follower spring to 870 Police spec)

Casey mentioned that he was not sure if he could get a high gloss blued carrier. He ordered the current Wingmaster carrier; it is more of a semi gloss blue rather than the high gloss blue of the old part, but it is certainly better than the matt black express version.

Cheers

I have yet to be unimpressed with anything coming out of TacOrd...
