time to tap the wisdom again, my magazine tube for my rem 870 wont unscrew, i have an 870 express with an 8 round tube, first time trying to field strip it and it wont come off, i have field stripped the army 870's multiple times and remember how to do it perfectly, visually the front end is the exact same as i remember it, anyone know whats going on?

you sure you arent remembering the Mossberg 500/590? :D
the 870 magazine tube is brazed to the receiver, and does not unscrew.

or do you mean the mag extension?
just remove the barrel clamp, and then unscrew it. sometimes its on there pretty tight.

i know how they come apart, the nut at the bottom of the mag extension is on so tight it wont move. i took the mag extension off to try and reef it out of there but it wasnt happening

can you take a pic of exactly what it is you are trying to do?
maybe with an arrow pointing to what exactly you are trying to unscrew?
the photo i posted shows what comes apart - nothing else 'unscrews'.

sometimes mag extensions are on pretty tight but they arent that hard to remove. use one of those silicone pot pad things to grab it if its hard to unscrew. never use pliers.

if your just trying to get the extension off and its a used gun, there is a change someone use loc-tite or grips to keep it tight, not sure why but i have seen it happen.

sorry i didnt explain myself clearly there, i have no idea how to post pictures, but if i didnt have a magazine extension i would be attempting to unscrew the end cap to remove the pump, man bear pig, in your picture you have the mag extension standing on end, the bottom part thats resting on the floor is what is stuck hopefully that makes sense

???

That makes no sense. The mag extension and the nut are one piece.

that bottom nut is not supposed to come off your mag extension.

so to clarify, youre saying that the mag tube came off but the part i circled in red, the knurled nut, is still on the gun?

if yes, and its a new gun that came with the mag extension, then dont do anything else. dont touch the nut with pliers. take the gun back and get it exchanged under warranty - that nut is NOT supposed to come off the mag tube.

if its a used gun/out of warranty then just unscrew it with a pair of vise grips with something underneath to pad them. then you can either try and repair the mag tub (braze?) or just buy a proper one. i recommend the Wilson Combat/Scattergun Tech extension for $45 from Brownells: its one of the best built extensions, comes with a sling plate and costs a lot less than most other extensions.

Ahem ... the two and three round OEM 870 magazine extensions ARE a two part item. That bottom part circled in the above photo DOES unscrew off the extension.

Apparently the OP has removed the extension and that bottom part is still screwed on the magazine tube.

Like BadBoy said, it is probably locktited on. Apply some gentle heat and try again applying a piece of leather around it and channel lock pliers being careful to not deform its circumference.

my bad, ive owned just about every mag extension (Wilson Combat/Choate/S&J/Nordic Components) with the exception of the factory 870 one and the TacStar. theyre all one-piece units.

but if your mag extension tube is unscrewing WHILE the nut is still on your gun, that cant be good. wtf?

thats exactly whats happening, the knurled nut is stuck on the gun and the mag extension itself is coming off

No worries, I like to think there's a reason why we're all here. :)

Once the extension is held in place by the barrel clamp, that bottom nut isn't going to move. When tight, it becomes integral to the extension.

Wrap some electrical tape around it to protect the finish then use vice grips clamped gently.

Pushing the barrel towards the receiver while loosening the nut will help as well.

I do this by resting the butt on the floor and pushing down with my body weight and left hand on the muzzle while turning the nut with my right hand.

When attempting to remove the "nut" reinstall the extension first. The extra material will minimize the chance of "squishing" the nut when attempting to remove.

slow down with the wrenches. It is definitly two pcs. You need to use a strap wrench, thats the only way to guarantee you don't scratch it. I had a marine magnum do the same thing one time.

There's no need to hulk it on. The spring and detent keep it from twisting off. Finger tight is all the force you need to lock it in place. Also, when the barrel clamp is on, how is it going move at all?

I don't know what you mean by "the nut is so thin", 'cause it isn't. It's thick enough to stay on securely. Just don't use any monster tools to twist it on. ... and use the barrel clamp as intended by Remington.
