Hi, I'm going to pickup a 870 tactical with the A-TACS paint scheme on it this week and i was wondering why is the magazine clamp necessary? Why does the the one that Scatter Gun Technologies sell not need one?

It's not really an issue of necessary vs. unnecessary. It's an issue of durability (even with abuse) vs. accuracy with slugs.

You can remove the clamp, if you want to, especially if you are not going to break any windows with your muzzle, or you can add a clamp to the Wilson tube.

I've been looking to buy one of these clamps but haven't had much luck sourcing one.
If you're selling yours or if anyone know where I can get one please PM me.

So what your saying is, i can leave it on for durability because it supports the magazine tube and barrel in hard use or if i run out of shells and start wailing on the guy with the barrel, but, i loose accuracy at long distances, especially with slugs? That about sum it up?

The clamp is necessary to prevent excessive flexing of the extension, which can cause damage to the shallow threads on the magazine tube. The downside is that care must be taken to tighten the clamp consistently to maintain zero with slugs.

Personally, I am able to get good slug accuracy out of my 870 with a Choate +3 extension secured with the clamp it came with.

So theoretically if i use a torque wrench and put the same amount of tension on the screw every time my point of impact should always be the same?

Provided that the clamp is positioned at exactly the same place, perhaps.

Recoil may cause it to move.

It is also the only place for a swival stud for real world applications..

i got rid of most of my mag extensions from my 870s, and currently have only one left - a choate, mounted under an 18" 870P barrel. the choate extension is arguably the worst quality of the bunch (with the exception of the plastic extensions). ive owned the scattergun tech/wilson combat and S&J extensions and they were much more solidly built.
regardless, if you grab both the barrel and extension in one hand and squeeze them together the extension will not budge at all. so unless you plan on bludgeoning zombies with your mag extension, a clamp seems pretty unnecessary for civilian use. YMMV.

ive owned the S&J clamp and was happy with it, but it was just for the bayonet mount functionality.
