REMINGTON 870 or WINCHESTER 1300

After Remington's president made a comment about not caring about Canadians due to them making up 4% of their total sales, I'd go with the Winchester on principle.

I dunno ... they are close.

The 1300 is much smoother cycling (once cleaned)
The 870 has fewer parts.

The 1300 has an aluminum receiver
The 870 is all steel

The 1300 holds 1 more shell
The 870 has more aftermarket goodies

Those two are so close, I'd probably go in and hold them both... then decide on feel.

Either would be fine though, I've owned 870's in the past... and I have a 1300 Practical Defender now (and enjoy it much).

It all depends with what you are going to do with it? I own both I use the 1300 for turkey hunting as it is IMHO the fastest factory pump out there, mind you it took me a bit of time to get use to the gun semi pumping it self. The one thing I REALLY DON'T LIKE about this gun is it's alloy frame. The 870 is by far a better gun!!! (IMHO). If my life were in the hands of a shotgun it would be an 870!!!!!!!!

870

the 870 remington is a tougher action and i have owned both. They are both good, i also think the 870 in the wood stock is finnished a little better. I just bought a M37 Ithica featherweight used and i tell you i like i better than both the others.

My dads got a win 1200, the action is so smooth and easy. If you hold the gun straight up it will almost open the chamber it's self, it never jams.

The 870 is the best pump shotgun Remington has ever made. It basically will exchange parts with the 870's produced in the 1950's without any fitting required. It is proven to be an excellent shotgun. I can highly recommend it.

Not to buy it because it is a Remington does not make sense to me.....I could care less about frustrated comments badgered out of one person.

The Winchester 1200/1300 series is the best pump shotgun Winchester produces. It has a good reputation although I believe the 870 outranks it a bit overall.

The Remington action is mostly steel, The Winchester mostly aluminum and more plastic. Both models are not perfect all the time. Occassionally I have seen minor problems out of the box with both.

It is a personal choice - both will serve you well.

guntech's got it right. They are both perfectly suitable guns. See which one fits you best, really, as that will have more influence on how well you shoot it than anything else.

I'm not so much concerned about the comment being inflammatory as much as how representative the comment is in regards to Remington standing behind their product.

Iv'e owned both types. Winchester in 20 gauge and the Remington in 12 gauge, maybe it's a big bang thing but I much prefer the 870. That and I had numerous feeding problems with the 1300

I have not experienced any problem with Remington not standing behind their product - ever in the last 35 years.

My most recent experience where I used their warranty was about 4 years ago. I had purchased a couple of USED 700 barrels at a gun show in the US. One of the bores looked funny to me on better inspection when I got it home, and it felt funny when running a tight patch through it. I ended up sending this barrel to Remington for inspection. They contacted me very quickly and said the barrel was flawed and they would gladly replace it. I told them how I had bought it. They said it did not matter, if I were to send them any action, they would replace it with a new barreled action in a caliber of my choice.... they just could not send me a barrel by itself - they don't do that. I ended up sending a rusty beat-up action without the trigger and very quickly received a new BDL barreled action complete at no charge. They also included a few extra springs and things I needed. This was all done as an individual - not a gunsmith.

I have not required any more warranty services since then.

I Just bought a 1300 Defender and I like it for the most part. Has a little more plastic on it than I appreciate but what are you gonna do? These days just about every friggen company has the "Cheaper, Faster" mentality. I think It'll work pretty well. Takin it out to blast stuff on Sunday. If I could buy an Aftermarket Trigerguard and safety for it I would in a Second.

I'm going to Agree with buying Winchester on Principal. The Remington Comments were Out of Line.

So,

If you weren't sure how easy the Winchester 1300 cycles:

Today I did some *careful* one handed shooting with the Winchester 1300... it ejects the hulls like a semi-auto! Literally. All I had to do was chamber the new shell.

My pet peeve though... on my Practical Defender the rear sight is a pain in the ass to try to "set." If I could do it again, I'd just get the regular Defender.
The rear sight is pretty worthless.

:(

The Win 1300. Much faster action, much smoother, easier to field strip & clean, MUCH BETTER customer service, NO QUALITY CONTROL ISSUES (unlike Remington in the last few years). Most add-ons are available for the 1300 just as the 870, just less manufacturers make them. In the last two years , we had several people in our club buy the Remmy's: all but 1 had issues. There were reliability issues, poorly made mag plugs sticking in the follower and binding the spring, FTF issues, FTE issues, fit & finish probs and a POS barrel that was either poorly machined or bent. Wouldn't pattern at all.
Ultimately it's your decision: I do acknowledge that the 870's WERE a quality shotgun... but lately, I wouldn't take one if it were free.

Regards,

I like the 870. Have used them for years and love the way they fit. Lots of after market gizmos if you like to play and parts are readily available.
