Remington 870 problem

My buddy has a Remington 870 Tactical that isn't fully seating due to the extractor not lining up with the barrel extractor groove. It will line up if the forestock is rotated counterclockwise while holding the gun normally, but not without actively rotating it. It all started with another shooter trying to force the gun into battery when the gun was presumably doing the same thing. You can see the misalignment and 'rounding' of the barrel extractor groove.

We've tried interchanging parts from the gun into another working gun, and the all the parts (barrel, forestock, bolt assembly) work in the receiver of the working gun. We've also tried taking the parts from the working gun (barrel, forestock, and bolt assembly) and putting it into the gun in question, where the gun mis-aligns the extractor to the barrel extractor groove.

Here's the pics. Any ideas?

The issue would then be with the receiver. Look at each very very closely and try and see any differences. For example, in the non-working receiver does the rail screw(s) poke though slightly and cause the bolt to deflect ever so slightly?
Or, is there a guide rail for the bolt not straight?
It it works with one receiver / bolt and not the other set, there is a reason.

Did you mean when you tried parts from a working gun in the problem gun, it did not work?

Have you tried inspecting the two bolts assemblies side by side? Any noticeable differences?

Check the extractor spring, In the photo the extractor is twisted in the bolt. I would remove the bolt disassemble and clean. I once had extraction problems caused by debris under the extractor.

... the extractor not lining up with the barrel extractor groove. It will line up if the forestock is rotated counterclockwise while holding the gun normally, but not without actively rotating it.

To me, the text and the pics look like two different problems. The text indicates a broken ejector, while the pics indicate that the extractor needs fit.

The front end of the ejector should fit into a slot in the barrel, a quick look into an open ejection port will tell one way or another.

The extractor may need some material removed from the front of the leg, allowing it to pivot the hook outwards a tad.

Before physically modifying any parts, I would strongly recommend the OP to do a side by side comparison between a known good bolt assembly (first stripped and then re-assembled) and the problem bolt assembly. Try to identify anything different.

How about a picture of the bolt face?
Two pictures of the assembled gun and problem shown so far.
One more of the bolt face will go along way in solving this issue.
Specifically the extractor to see if it is broken.
Not to mention is the barrel an oem or aftermarket one?
Are the barrels pushed in all the way to seat as deep as possible and the cap screw guddenentite too?
**guddenentite ** good and tight

Is the gun under warranty? If so, call Gravel Agency. Not sure what they'll say if the gun has been modified in anyway.

As for the problem, if twisting the forend counter clockwise solves it..and it's rubbing where it is, all you're clearly doing is twisting the bolt carrier (=bolt as well) slightly up on the ejector side...it's fitting the notch, functioning right. It would be pretty easy to increase the notch size with a tiny file but before doing that, I'd confirm the extractor looks like it should..and isn't damaged in any way. If not, and you want the problem solved...I'd open-up that notch. Shouldn't take long, but work gradually...reinstall, check, repeat if req.

Hello all,
It's my 870 tactical that this post is about. We tried the parts from the working rifle in the broken one and it still didn't work so I'm thinking it's an issue with my receiver. When we compared the internal parts they all looked good from what I could tell. Thanks for the help.

I have been able to fix firearms previous to this. I was just hoping to be able to figure it out myself but now it's starting to feel like I will have to send it in.
