Hello all,

I just got a Remington 870 Super Mag in the mail the other day. It is the black synthetic version with the 30" barrel.
I want to make a tactical shotgun.

Accessories I want:

Shorter barrel - I can't decide b/w an 18.5" barrel or a 20" barrel. ( I want an exchangeable choke system if I can)
Magazine Extension - I will eventually put the largest magazine extension that fits without protruding past the front of the barrel on the gun, that said, if the 20 inch barrel will allow me an extra cartridge while still sitting flush with the front of the barrel, then that is decided for me.
Accessory rail - Where is the best place to mount a flashlight?

Where is the best place to purchase the shorter barrel. I can only seem to find one store that sells them, Wholesale Sports. If anyone knows where else I can buy one please let me know.

I look forward to hearing everyone's opinions and advice.

Eric

20 inch allows for a longer extension and more rounds, you will need a clamp for the extensions so you might as well get a clamp that has a rail on it for your light.
BadBoyBeeson's company S&J Hardware, has almost everything you will need and he might even have a barrel kicking around?
You can try the EE for a barrel as well. The 20" barrels come with a bead or rifle sights if you prefer.

Casey at TacOrd. He can do the whole project. Dlask is good for parts allso. There is lots of "meat" in there short barrels to thread for chokes. Magpull stocks.

I don't think that Dlask manufactures barrels in 18''-20'' lengths but they do sell 18.5'' factory takeoffs with rifle sights for a reasonable price. If you're inclined to go shorter I'm running one of their 14'' barrels that I had threaded for rem chokes. I am very happy how quickly the gun points with the short barrel, and having it threaded makes it pretty versatile.

Hey guys, thanks for the great advice, I'll look into it and post some updates soon! In terms of magazine extensions, are some better than others for reliability? Or are the differences purely for looks?

Check out Dlask for barrel options.

I prefer short shotguns but I'm sure others will be along to help with your questions.

When you say you prefer short shotguns, more specifically in what barrel legnth range? And if you don't mind me asking, why the preference for a shorter barrel (perhaps 12 -14 inches), is it for maneuverability, or weight savings? I'm quite curious, as I still am evaluating my options and don't want to over look any potentially favorable options (such as a barrel even shorter than the 18" I was initially thinking).

In general I prefer short barrel guns. My 10/22 is a 9" barrel, my 870 is a 8.5" barrel, I just like short guns. There are reasons for this too.

I find a shorter gun is easier to carry in the field, easier to maneuver, and points more naturally for me.

I spend a lot of time in the woods so my 870 is my woods defense gun too, size and easy of carry make it a real winner for me.

There are pros and cons of course, shorter shotguns have lower capacity as a downside. I think the 12.5" is how I'd go next. Can use any standard parts and can always drop a longer barrel plus mag extension on when wanted then pull the mag extension and longer barrel off and put the 12.5" on when headed into the wilds.

there are lots of factory Remington barrels to be had in the lengths that you mentioned of 18 to twenty inches . watch the e.e. and i am sure you can find one .one thing you will not find a lot of barrels that will take the 3.5 inch shells the super mag is designed for but do not let that stop you from purchasing and using a barrel chambered in a shorter length as they will fit and work in your gun .
