Ok, so I have posted a thread a few days ago looking for a dedicated slug gun but now I am thinking maybe I should just buy another barrel for my 870 Wingmaster. I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster 3" chamber with a 28" bird barrel right now, I want to explore my options for a rifled slug barrel with open sights.

I want a fully rifled barrel to shoot sabot slugs and I want open sights so I don't have to have a cheek piece added to my wingmaster, it comes up great with the bird barrel and bead so open sights im thinking will be the same.

However, is there any good aftermarket fully rifled slug barrels with tru-glo or nice fibre optic rifle sights and the gloss blue finish to match my wingmaster? Thanks

The gloss blue finish may be tough to find and you will pay dearly if you do. That being said I just use a barrel off a express combo on mine and it is just fine. I have the one with the scope mount but the open site ones are very common also but make sure it is rifled since some are not.

Forgot to add pending the year of your wingmaster pre 86 they use a different mag nut system, the new barrels are not made for the old indent system. I just use a big O ring and snug them down which seems to hold fine.

I recently purchased a standard black oxide finished Remington 23" cantilever rifled barrel to compliment my Marine Magnum. Works perfectly and I like the silver/black colour contrast. Just keep 'em oiled and you should have no problems. For a few dollars, you could also have Murdoc (Barrett Arms) Arma-coat it. I plan to have mine done this winter. Once coated (say, in gloss black), you will never have to worry about the finish again.

I think mossberg used to make a rifled slug barrel in blued finish for the 870. Recently I have only seen them in matte but you may. Be able to find one used or old stock. I hope I am not out to lunch on this but I think they were ported and blued in the past.

You are right they did for sure but I don't think they had a rifled bore?? but I could be wrong. After shooting both smooth and rifled I would not use anything but a rifled bore now.

I just purchased a new stock 870 Wingmaster/Express 20" smooth bore for my 870. The fit and finish was great. A very dark subdued finish not at all like the old express finish. The barrel had the detent ball and labeled to fit both Express and Wingmaster 870's. I was very impressed with this barrel and the effort Remington put into it. Quality control was very evident. Just aside it cost 175.00, in 1980 I bought a Wingmaster Finish slug barrel ( the express version did not exist) at Elwood Epps in Orillia and it cost 150.00. Maybe the old days were not so great.

It is good to hear Darryl that they are now making them with the detent ball to fit both models. The ones I have here are quite a bit older and were really made for express only. Now Now the old days were the best :)

Yep my 870 rifled barrel that I bought separately has the detent ball and is designed to fit wingmaster, express, and "special purpose" guns. Good quality is evident.

Here is what Remington offers for extra barrels:

#24558 is fully rifled with sights and gloss blue finish. Truglo makes fibre optic sight sets that fit Remington sight bases.

I bought a 20" smoothbore barrel with rifle sights and threaded for choke tubes (#24545). The bluing matches that on my 1974 870 Wingmaster and it has a ball detent to retain the magazine cap.

Mossberg make one. Blued, rifled, open sights and cheaper than a remington.
Put one on my 1975 wingmaster and shot 4 deer so far with it.
Very happy.

So there is no such thing as an aftermarket fully rifled barrel with gloss blue finish and open fiber optic rifle sights for a 3" 870 Wingmaster?

Add the Truglo Remington rifle/shotgun sight set to the Remington #24558 barrel and you will have what you are looking for.
