I'm looking into purchasing my first shotgun and I was wondering if anyone here has any experience or opinion on the Remington 870 Special Purpose Marine Magnum. I'm not looking to hunt game with it, I'm just looking for an all purpose sport/target shooting shotgun which will be used on the odd tin can/watermelon.

I like the look of this shotgun combined with its overall short lenght and 6 round mag.

Very good choice - the 870 is a bomber platform with many after market options available. The marine finish makes for a low-maintainance gun.

I don't own a marine magnum, but I do own an 870 - you will not be disappointed.

MikeyT, thanks for the input.

I know the 870 line to be legendary so the 870 Marine Magnum is on the list to order for this Spring.

I just noticed something about it though and please correct me if I'm wrong. The barrell lenght on that model is 18", doesn't it have to be a minimum of 18 1/2" in Canada?

Semi=18.5 minimum. Have an 870MM and love it, It's nearly indestructable. The R3 pad makes shooting quite pleasant IMO especially compared to many other shotguns. Buy one!

Ah, so the "minimum 18.5" applies only yo semi-auto shotguns? Pumps are excluded then and the 18" on the 870 is ok?

I've seen the R3 pad advertised a lot, it is really worth it? Looking to shoot Magnum Slugs as well.

Here is a pic of mine with the 14 inch Norc barel:)
