Remington 870 sportsman/field

I just bought a sportsman/field 870 28". I am a little new to shotguns, but have been rifle hunting for years. I am going turkey hunting for the first time this spring. I bought this gun as an all purpose shotgun knowing that it's an 870, and I can do all sorts of things with it.

I want to use this shotgun for turkey,grouse, skeet/trap.
I purchased this shotgun as an intro-gun and may upgrade to others in the future.

I have a few questions, forgive my newbness.
1. I haven't fired it yet, cleaning, disassembly, oiling?
2. Slugs, interchangable barrels.
3. Camo stocks,brands of?
4. Shot size for turkey?
5. Shot size for skeet/trap?
6. Camo gun socks, camo gun tape?

All info would be greatly appreciated.

The 870 is capable of doing everything on your list!!!!

1) cleaning and disassembly...read your owners manual or search youtube!!!! lol

2) as for slugs you can screw in your improved cylinder choke and fire the old foster style slugs or you can purchase a rifled choke tube or buy a fully rifled barrel and fire sabots, get a cantilever barrel and you can add a scope! lots of options

3) For Camo...tape it..sock it.. paint it ...or buy the aftermarket camo'ed stock and forearm!

4) turkey shot size... Check your provincial hunting regs!!!! in ONT. it's 4,5 or 6 shot size only!!!!!

5) skeet/trap ... check with your range!! most only allow 7 1/2 shot or samller 8,9

6) all the camo socks I've tried sucked!!! Tape is Ok... cloth is better than the vinyl. If you leave the tape on to long it's hard to take off. The adhesive generally sticks all over the place. Comes off fairly easily with some cleaning solvent maybe tougher on a parkerized finish...........with that being said!!!

This is important: IF IT RAINS OR REALLY FOGGY/DAMP OUT.... GET THE F'N TAPE OFF AS SOON AS YOU CAN OR YOUR GUN WILL...... I REPEAT "WILL" RUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps the 870 is likely the most versitle shotgun on the market. The aftermarket parts and possibilities are quite honestly endless. If you can think of it the 870 has a parts avaliable to do it.... and I'm not even a Remington fan !!!

Make sure you try it out. I just bought an 870 Super mag. Went out to try some shooting. First shot went bang......but when I tried to cycle the next one...it wouldn't budge. Had to dissasemble the gun and use a few tools before I finally got the sob out of the barrel. Really pissed off because I couldn't put it back together at the spot I was at. So I went home , read the manual for dissassemby/reassembly and after about an hour I had it back together again. What I think the problem was I used a winchester low brass shell (not brass, must be aluminum) and it bulged a little just above the base where it meets the plastic. I then deactivated a Remington High speed load high brass and tried that one. No problem as I can see. The high brass probably holds the diameter not like the low brass. So try different brands and try to keep away from the cheap stuff. I now know better.
