Hi all,

I recently received my PAL and excitedly bought a Remington 870 tactical with 18.5" barrel (non returnable) and only after wondered if I should have bought a more hunting length shotgun. Does anyone out there swap barrels in their shotguns to make it more multi-purpose, or would it be easier to buy another hunting gun? Any advice to a newbie is greatly appreciated :)

Thanks,
Ryan

super easy to swap barrels, make the gun multi-purpose.

any gun shop/remington dealer should be able to help you. because you have the tactical model you need barrels with the detent ball, that's the little ball bearing on the mag tube ring that makes the click/rachet sound when you crew on the mag cap/mag extension.

barrels shipped as 'extras' have it, barrels shipped with the new express and wingmasters don't, so be careful to make sure it's there if you buy a 'take off' barrel from a newer gun.

You can kill anything with a 18" you can kill with a 30" hunt away, versatile as you need it to be!!!Now if you have a fixed choke you may have a few issues if so by another gun and have two!!

Hey, I just bought the same shotgun (the one with the ghost ring sights). I was also able to get a remington factory 26" barrel from Sail for 150 no tax... seemed like a good deal since the exact same barrel was 270 at bass pro. the first time i shot the gun i used the short barrel with the modified choke that came with the longer barrel. my patterns were just as good if not better than my buddies that were using 26 and 28" barrels with modified chokes. If you can't find a cheap barrel like i did i would just suggest to get a modified choke.

it does look good with the long barrel though, you just have to account for the lower bead sight when using the ghost ring... to bad i have no idea how to post a pic lol

Any 870 barrel (except 'special field' and MCS barrels) should fit that receiver.

You might find it tough (as noted above) to use the front bead since you have a GR on the rear, but you can get a ramped front on a lot of barrels. Or get one installed... or just figure out how it works with the bead and practice! :)

Thanks for the replies! It has a screw in choke, and the 6 shot magazine (with 2 shot extension). I am assuming I can use different Remington chokes and/or modify the magazine. (http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model-870/model-870-express-tactical.aspx). Good to know I can get different barrels for it. I wonder if a raised front ghost ring on a longer barrel would do instead of the bead? I could always take off the picatinny rail and just try it with bead front. I plan on going up to the Fish and Game this weekend and spending some time at the range.

screw in chokes give you lots of options without going to the expense of another barrel . they are available new, or used on the ee. what choke do you have in it now. keep asking questions and welcome to the world of shotguns one of the most versatile guns you can own .

As long as its not the new 2012 6 shot fixed mag tube.
If so you are screwed.

Yep, for those not yet aware. Remington has brought in a new approach for the long mag tube crowd. Look at the front end on this shottie:

The bare bones 870 Express I bought not long ago has this same six-round fixed tube (the pics on the Remington website haven't been updated yet). No swapping barrels on these ones without some sort of adapter.

I have the extended ported Tactical Rem Choke. Looks scary, but not sure if it is good for activities that don't involve blowing off door knobs/hinges. I see they sell a set, I will try to find something like that, or even a used one would be fine.

The tac choke is cyl bore, or really no choke at all. Point ability, handling, and sight base will all improve with a longer barrel. You can remover your rail to use regular barrels, it is held on with screws. For neatness you can get cap screws to fill the holes left when you take it off.
