Remington 870 vs Stoeger P350

Well, I'm in the market for a new waterfowl gun, and I of course looked at the "standard" option, the 870. But after reading some things, it appears lately they've been having some problems from Remington? So after some more poking around I found the Stoeger. After doing some reading, it appears the P350 is getting really good reviews, I was wondering if it was worth the extra money for one. With the Stoeger I'd get the option of using 3 1/2" shells vs Remington's 3", 5 chokes vs Remington's 1.

But then I thought, I'm probably going to be using a modified mainly anyways. I have an Uncle who, once I take the turkey course, wants to take me turkey hunting, and I've heard I would want a tighter choke than modified to hunt them. Of course there's the 3" vs 3 1/2" debate too. But I figure that if the gun will still pump the smaller shells smoothly, why not have it? I've found the P350 for about $360, and the Express for about $300.

I'm also expecting the shotgun to last me a while, and as a broke college student, every penny counts. So should I got with the time proven 870 or try the P350? Thanks,

Cory

I have one of each, My 870 is an older wingmaster that is slick as a greased pig to operate. I have 28 and 18.5 inch barrels for it and it has never given me any trouble at all. It sows its use as a hunting gun but always functions as it should.
My P350 was won at a Ducks Unlimited event and while I have not used it as much (only had it for a year) it also has never given me any issues. The one thing to keep in mind is that it is quite light and the 3.5 inch shells will pound you hard!! I don't like my fillings rattling around so I only use 3". It is not as smooth as the wingmaster but that may be just because it has not been used nearly as much.
I like the classic 870 but see no reason not to buy the P350 if money is a concern. I don't think you could go wrong with either. See which one fits you best and go get some birds!!

You cant go wrong with the 870. I've had mine for 15+ years now and never had a problem. A good thing about the 870 is that extra barrels are reasonably cheap and easy to come by in case you want to use it for deer in the future. If you really want to shoot 3 1/2" shells you can get the 870 SuperMag for only a few $ more. The new laminated wood stocks are nice, but there is also a synthetic (tupperware) version as well if thats what appeals to you. I can't speak for the reliability of the Stoeger, but with over 6 million 870s sold, its a safe bet.

870, bought mine this summer, feeding problems the first day, after that, never had a feeding problem again.
Great gun.

You can read all day on the web about which gun is better and why, but what you need to do is go to your local gunshop and handle both. One gun will fit you better, thats the gun you buy.

With that said, I found the foregrip on the P350 was a strange shape for me and the 870 was a great fit. I have smaller hands and found the 870 is narrower that most others(Stoeger. BPS...)

On the other hand the 870 Express finish leaves a little bit to be desired, it is fine if you clean it almost every other time it is out of the safe

Sadly, the 870s of today are no where near the quality of your 15 year old gun but of the two cited, I'd still go for the 870. For a hundred bucks more, the Benelli Nova is a whole lot more gun!
