The barrel is an 18" cyl bore and is stamped 2 3/4 or 3 inch..This I dont care about as I know the barrel will handle whatever is stamped on it

The receiver is stamped Remington 870 ...not magnum or not express etc....

serial number does not end with an M

Am I able to shoot a 3 inch shell through this rig?

I guess I need to clearer, am I able to use 3 inch ammo consistently and safely through it ?

Shoot . . . yes.

Eject the empty . . . Maybe.

I tried out of curiosity and mine did eject the empty. I did not try to run the 3" shells through the mag.

The barrel will shoot the 3 inch, but as has been pointed out, it may not eject the spent hull. You may have a 2 3/4 inch set-up receiver with the ejector set for those hulls.

I too was confused on my barrel and receiver markings.
since a shotgun barrel can be changed easy, the markings on your barrel means can shoot up to 3" shells when attached to a receiver which can handle the extra pressure.

using my 870 wingmaster i bought new, the barrel is stamped 3' fixed full choke and the receiver has a M suffix. A couple of years ago I wanted a barrel (looking at an express model which is stamped 2 3/4 to 3 1/2") with removal chokes so I called Remington. they said the replacement new barrel I was looking at can handle 3 1/2" but my receiver is not a super magnum, so it can't shoot the 3 1/2" just what the receiver can handle the original 3".

But to be on the safe side I would suggest to call Remington before I would take ant action.

thanks...ill go find out firsthand what it can at some point today..only way i will truly know

If the barrel is original to it, it’s likely an express magnum. All of my 870 express magnums are only stamped with Remington 870 on the receiver, they all shoot and eject 3” shells. Chalk it up to cutting manufacturing costs.

my goodness man..thank you very much........please look at the pic i posted in the original poxt and see if your looks like it

Remington 870 is a very popular pump action 12, if you can get a spare barrel for hunting it will serve you well for any type of game.

do I read this right the suffix is W? do you have a 16 g not a 12 g?
Just a little confused

From shotgun world info
Model 870 LETTER SUFFIX (DESIGNATES GAUGE)
V 12 GA. (2 3/4”)
M 12 GA. MAGNUM (3”)
A 12 GA. “SUPER” MAGNUM (3 ½”)
W 16 GA. ( 2 ¾” )
X 20 GA. “HEAVY FRAME” (DISCONTINUED)
N 20 GA. “HEAVY FRAME MAGNUM” (DISCONTINUED)
K 20 GA. “LIGHT WEIGHT” (“LW”) (ALSO INCLUDES M/1100 “LT”)
U 20 GA. LW MAGNUM (ALSO INCLUDES M/1100 “LT”)
J 28 GA.
H .410 BORE (2 ½” OR 3”)

For what date range is this supposed to be valid??

I own several 870 Police, 12ga, 3" ....

... one serial number ends in A
... another in R
... another with an X
... and another in a U

And those are all 870 Police 3" not older than 5 years ....

Looks the same as my newest production express I bought brand new a couple years ago, the finish of the receiver is the blued bead blasted finish the express models have. Everyone cry’s about them dusting but if you wipe them with an oily rag after they fully dry you shouldn’t have any surface rust, mine go hunting in the pouring rain and they never rust.

I think these are generally suffixes used by Remington. But who know if they are consistent during their in and out of receivership.

I would call them.

As for the first post as which shotgun he has (not sure if it’s possible.....maybe someone put a 12 g barrel on a 16 g receiver). I would have a gunsmith go over the gun. Or call Remington and give and ask their opinion. I would not be running to the range to test fire it

Finally got info from the seller....is in fact a 12 guage, all original barrel and such...It was the serial number thing that really though me off..

I did fire 2 3/4 and some 3 inch and it shot and ejected perfectly.. ..

That is a late model receiver, and was made way after the last 2 3/4 12 ga 870 was built.

The Codes for the receiver listed above were for the Wingmasters, before any of the Express's, I believe. I just look at the square computer scan box on the receiver, that is not an old 2 3/4. I think if you scan it it links to a manual.

The only difference in the old 870 2 3/4 and 3" was the ejector placement. To accommodate 3" shells Remington moved the ejector 1/4" further back.

Please fact check, but what I said is pretty close to the truth.

Judging by the Dot matrix serial number etching (post-2015) Yes, the receiver is 3” mag capable. All newer 870s are magnums. The barrel will say “2-3/4 or 3”

Measure the ejection port.
Magnums have a 3” wide port. New(er) 870s are all 3”. Earlier 2-3/4” barreled 12 ga. have a shorter port by 1/4”. They also use a shorter ejector spring. Presently, though the ejector is the same for both, a 3” ejector spring is used as a replacement for the 2-3/4s as well.
The receivers are the same. There’s no extra pressure to worry about between one and the other. If you use a 3” barrel with a 2-3/4” receiver, the only issue you may run into is ejection reliability ‘cause of the shorter ejector spring and ejection port size.
