I just purchased a used 870 Magnum (28"bbl with removable chokes) that is about 10yrs old.

On the side of the bbl it reads

Use 2-3/4 or 3" in Magnum Recievers
Use 2-3/4 in all others
Light Contour - Do not modify

My question is this....can I shoot steel shot through it??

You sure can. Light contour barrels are factory lightened and cannot have the forcing cones reamed any further. Your gun will handle any steel load BUT do not shoot big steel through the FULL choke tube. Won't hurt the gun but will likely pattern poorly with larger shot sizes ie: BBB T or F. It will likely pattern steel 2's and 3's well. Mine does.

cheers Darryl

870

Thanks Darryl,
I just purchased it and was not sure because I know some of the older guns were touch and go with Steel Shot and HeviShot. This is my first Wingmaster and after handling it I cannot wait for duck season! They are beautiful, but this one was a hunting gun adn was used (but not abused) - I tall you I'd love to get a new one and keep it as a safe queen!!

Thanks again - John

Was that the $300 gun on OHL?

If so, that is a great deal, and it looked like the gun had really nice wood. Way better buying a used WM then a new Express imho.

Welcome to the (big) club of Wingmaster owners. I just bought my 2nd (870TB for trap) yesterday. My late model Wingmaster 3" Magnum went turkey hunting with me last Saturday. (also light contour bbl, screw in chokes)

About steel, you shouldn't over choke it anyways. Even IC gives a good pattern for shooting ducks with steel in mine. Trust the patterning board, not the label on the choke.

LOL it was one and the same. I was up at Adrians turkey hunting last Monday and I was talking about scoping my turkey gun but that would mean I would need to buy another gun for duck (like that is a problem  ) because I have a 22" and a 28" bbl for the 1300 and switched them for turkey/duck.

That is when Adrian tells me of Ken's Wingmaster that was for sale on the board so I called Ken the Tuesday and picked it up Wednesday. It was used as a hunting gun but it was WELL cared for and the wood is beautiful!! When I went to look at it he unzipped the case to show me and I picked it up looked at the other side and sholdered it and said I'll take it before I had my cheek off the stock:D Best $300 I ever spent - suprised it lasted as long as it did.

I have never used anything tighter than a Mod on my 1300 with 3" HV Steel shells - did the job nicely out to 40-45yds!

John

P.S.
We did get a bird that day!!

John, Glad to see you got it. If I was not buying all this camera gear I would have jumped on it myself. You can not beat this gun and yes I shoot steel all the time. Improved Cyl with kent faststeel best Goose combo I've seen with mine.

I can not remember if that gun has screw in's or is fixed , but if not I would look for a 28 in vent rib and have the barrel done with screw ins. You'll never take another gun with you...

Adrian is right. That gun will do everything you need. Only thing better then a WIngmaster is several Wingmasters!!!
