Remington 870 Wingmaster VS Browning BPS

I would like to put these two fine shotguns into a head to head battle!! Remington 870 wingmaster is a classic of course, and the Browning BPS Hunter with the same walnut stock is also a gorgeous gun!! When it comes down to it, which one of these two is going to be more reliable?? I know the BPS has the bottom loading and ejection and it would be harder to strip to clean. But how often do you have to do an overhaul of your gun anyways?? I hear soo many guys stating that the Ithaca 37 was one of the finest guns ever made if not the best. Isn't the BPS based on that exact same platform?? I also hear some statements that the new wingmasters are not nearly the quality of the ones of old. That being said has the BPS taken over as far as quality and standards go?? If you needed one of these two shotguns for the rest of your life, which one would it be?? Cheers
 
I've heard good things about the Stoeger P-350, for that matter. Damn, I don't own one but I've heard good things about all of the new Stoeger stuff.

I would pick the 870, a friend of mine had a Browning that he bought new and he used to say that BPS stood for "Browning Piece of ####", it would never feed reliably. On the other hand I have never heard of an 870 that wasn't good.
 
I've had 3 wingmasters loved them all! My 20 gauge was my favourate! swaped it to Doug. Wish I had that gun back. Both I think are quality firearms. Both cost about the same. The wood on the wingmasters is nicer. I think. Dollar for dollar I think either one is a great choice. Just a matter of what you think you like better. Buy one of each! That way you don't have to make a tough decision. LOL.

I've had both - had failures to feed with the 870, but none with the BPS. The Remington was purchased in 1972, the BPS in 1981. Both were easy to strip down and clean out. The Browning has the ability to switch from a repeating pump to a single shot, which the Remington hasn't - making it quick and easy to change the chamber load. Being a lefty, the BPS is great in keeping your empty hulls in front of you while the Remington would scatter hulls all over the place. Both actions were smooth, with the BPS a bit better in this regard.

Based on my experiences with both, the BPS is the superior shotgun.
 
I have had both, and now only own the Wingmaster.

In all honesty, the BPS is slightly smoother in operation, has somewhat better build quality, and IMHO is a better overall design (ambi safety, bottom eject, raised carrier, etc.). That being said, it just doesn't fit me at all. The 870 OTOH mounts and swings like it was designed for me.

Thus, the bottom line is the usual one when discussing shotguns - get the one that fits you best.
 
Sorry guys, when it comes down to the all time 'greatest' shotgun nothing comes close to the reliability, toughness and overall construction of the Winchester Model 12. I have owned many of them as well as Remington 870's and for reliability nothing beats the Model 12. They absoltely never jam, never misfire and will load and eject virtually anything that has powder and shot in it! This should heat up the discussion..
 
I myself like the BPS better, found less recoil (heavier gun) and less problems with ejecting. only thing i disliked about the bps was the weight. my arms would be longer after carring it.
