Good Day All,
This is my 1st post on this site. Learning tons and love it. Anywho just got my PAL/RPAL and starting the collection. I just bought a Beretta A400 Xteme and love it. Looking to at add a pump shotgun to the collection. I really liked the 870 Wingmaster but have heard some people trash it and some love it. Wondering what your thoughts on the 870 Wingmaster is or should I be looking at something else?

Thanks

The 870 Wingmaster is still an awesome shotgun. The quality of the new ones compared to the older ones is about 95% IMHO. The new guns have some of the nicest wood ever available from Remington, except for the older Skeet, Trap and custom shop versions. They now have machine cut checkering vs the cheap and tacky pressed checkering they had for way too many years! The blueing is just as good if not better than it ever was! You get a Light Contour RemChoke barrel that make the gun livelier than ever. The down side to the new Wingmaster is the use of a MIM extractor, the chrome plating of the bolt is questionable and way too many barrels leave the factory crooked (that goes for all Remington shotguns)! All in all if you find a new Wingmaster with straight barrel you will not be disapointed if you buy it!

The 870 Wingmaster is legendary. Find one you like, at a price you're comfortable with, either new or used, and if you are so inclined, keep it to hand down to a grand child.

Remington 870 Wingmaster is the best there is.

If you can find used older model in good shape, buy it and don't look back.

Yep one of the best for sure
They would not sell over 10 million of them if they were junk
Still have my 1st one I bought new in 1965 and many many more since
Love them all
Cheers

the 870 wingmaster is great and is the best version of the 870 IMO, but you should also look at the 590(not the 500 as it has a plastic trigger group, 590 is metal and much stronger). Both the 870 wingmaster and mossberg 590 are excellent shotguns, but i prefer the winchester model 12 over both of them its cheaper too

This one is from 1974. Love it

Wingmasters are great at any age. The ones you might see quality control issues are the very cheap Express versions. The Express may well work well ouy of the box, or they may some polishing to be their best. And maybe a new coating finish. But Wingmasters... no worries, buy and enjoy.

I agree on the Wingmaster greatness.

Since you're new I'll dare some off-topic suggestions:
-if you're left-handed you can look for a left-handed 870 or a Browning BPS
-the BPS is a great pump for a right-handed as well, trigger, mechanism and reliability are hard to beat

Yup...870 Wingmasters are probably the greatest pump shotgun ever made and the standard to which all pumps are held. But make no mistake here...we are talking 870 Wingmasters...Not...870 Express which is a crude poor copy of the original Wingmaster's. I agree that the older pre 1992 era 870 Wingmasters where the best out of them all.

I have a 870 with 4 barrels. It is a 2 3/4 chamber. Even though it gets little use, it is a great shotgun. If you get a 3" it will do anything you need and will last your lifetime. You should never feel like you should have got something better. Buy once and be happy.

Far to many think all 870's are Wingmasters.
The Wingmaster stands alone and is not the same gun as it's slum dwelling cousin from across the EXPRESS tracks.
People wanted a cheap version and the same quality as the Wingmaster. They got the cheap part .
I have 3 wingmasters, 2 of them were made in the early to mid 50's , and function great. The only issue I have had was the 20ga after tens of thousands of shots wore the trigger sear down. It took a couple licks from a fine file to square it up again and it has been fine ever since.

I have an express barrel on a newer 12 that I had to trade for to shoot steel with. Worst trade I ever made. That barrel is butt ugly , and the rough finish collects dirt and mud like a blanket. I have been looking for a true wingmaster barrel with choke tubes to replace the crappy express one .

Thanks all. I was reading a few reviews and people trashed the wingmaster. They said that it did nothing but jam. I don't think I have ever heard of a Wingmaster jamming that much.
But they might have gotten it confused with the Express.
A salesmen at wholesale sports showed me why I should spend the money on the wingmaster and not the express.

I'm for sure getting a Wingmaster just the problem is finding one in Calgary. No one seems to have one. I guess I will just order one.

Another question. What is the difference between the Wingmaster and the Sportsmen?

The people who were doing the reviews Likley got the Wingmaster mixed up with the express as Pete suggested.
All one has to do is look at them and you can see differences.
Cycle them and the differences are as obvious as night versus day .
The Sportsman is a cheaper version of the Wingmaster......

I would also sugest that recent production of ANYTHING remington has taken a quality hit.... Wingmasters included. Remington may put a higher finish on the wingmaster barrels but their off centre/ burred/ lipped chambers are the same issue in the express barrels...both of which probably come off of the same machine
