Remington 887 Nitro Mag or Mossberg 500? Any thoughts?

I'm looking to buy a cheap "bang around gun" to toss in the truck and go clay shooting. I hear mixed reviews on the 887 but a lot of the negative ones seemed to be older from when the gun first came out and I know the 500 is a pretty reliable budget SG because I use to own one but thinking I may want to try something else. Does anyone have an opinion or suggestion for either one of these shotguns or maybe another one in the same price range?

Just me, but I am done with Remington. They have done a super marketing job lately, what with all the t-shirts and truck stickers, but the last two I have used/owned have had issues.

I have a few buddys with the 500's and I think they are decent for the money, they have the advantage over the 887 in aftermaket options, but the nitromag takes 3 1/2" and is lighter and better in wet(I own one) there is barrel options but no stocks. I think your gonna have to think about what your using it for, duck and goose hunting in the rain or just a plain ol shotty

If it's any consolation my cousin has a 887 and the damn thing is bullet proof, it was used as a oar once and kept of truckin. I know 3 people who have HAD a 500 and one who had a 930. Safeties broke on all of them within a case of shells, buddy who sent his 500 in for repair got it back shot 3 shots and the end of the barrel split. He wrapped it around a tree, went out the next day bought a wingmaster and is happy happy happy.

Go buy yourself a nice Maverick 88. I bought mine new a last year for $199 + tax. Can't kill it. 887s are known to have many issues, do a google search. A guy I spoke to bought one new and while hunting out on the water it would feed two shells from the magazine when you pumped it after firing the first round. One would chamber and the other would eject right out of the boat. Makes for an expensive trip, or a two shot pump gun.
