I have a barrel that is chambered and threaded for a Remington and I want to put it on my 112 (small shank) savage action. Can I just have the threads recut to fit the savage or is the treaded portion longer on the Remington? If this is the case could a thicker recoil lug fix the length issue?

It requires the correct headspace with the barrel fitted close to the bolt. I believe the bolt recess at the rear of the barrel needs to be machined away and then the barrel turned down and threaded to fit the Savage action and the chamber correctly cut for headspace. This is not a job where a different thickness of recoil lug will be a cure all.

Heed Guntech's advice. You will need to work the whole chamber/thread end of the barrel. What you will end up with is a very short threaded section which will require the barrel nut to be cut down.

There is not alot of barrel shank before it tapers. This situation is aggrevated if you want to turn a long chamber to a short chamber.

Then you still are dealing with a factory pipe.

I think there was someone offering Lothar barrels for around $250/300 ready to install. In the long run, this will be 'cheaper' and likely a better shooter.

You should be able to sell the Rem pipe for $50 to 100 depending on cartridge chambered. That makes a aftermarket barrel that much cheaper.

Sorry Jerry I should have let you guys know that it is a Lilja straight taper barrel that starts out a 1.35" and is chambered in 6.5-284. I would be putting this barrel on without the barrel nut.

Just cut off the threaded portion or whatever is needed to gain a full thread for the Savage, and rethread/chamber. This would be a no brainer to install.

Personally, I would remove quite a lot of the old chamber if this barrel has seen some shooting. May as well start with a fresh throat without a lot of wear/cracking.
