I was wondering how difficult it is to change the bolt face on a rem 700. I have a short action 700 with the 308 size bolt face and I was thinking of building a .223 out of it. I have had rifles rebarreled in the past but always chose calibers that used the same shell holder. (my simple logic tells me that this should work, and it does) I know the Enfields have three sizes of bolt faces so head spacing is never a problem but I don't know what is involved in changing them. what specifically is involved in going to a smaller base cartridge? I might mention that it is a left handed action which is why I don't just run out and get a new one. But maybe the cost or the pain in the ass factor might dictate to buy new. Any insight would be helpful. Thanks Oh and I won't be attempting this myself. J

It can be done but it is easier to buy a .223 bolt and have it fitted. About $200 +.

The .308 action however will not feed .223 cartridges. You can buy an HS Precision detachable magazine assembly for .223 and then the 308 action will feed using this new assembly. It costs about $300.

You can buy a new rifle for a little more.

I have a 40X short action with the .223 bolt face that I was going to open up to .308. I would have to check with a smith but maybe we could do a swap.
