Hello, gonna treat myself to a new shottie this year. After reading a recent thread about Remington rifles and Q/C issues, are the 870's still as good as ever? I owned one about 20 years ago and thought it was the perfect gun for me. I want to get back into blasting geese and would like a 3.5" magnum. Apart from aesthetics, is there much to differentiate between the Wingmaster and the Express? Thanx in advance and happy new year!:dancingbanana:

I personally much prefer the superior finishing and smoothness of the Wingmaster. However, if you are seeking a 3.5" gun I believe you are stuck with the Express model.

Quality and finish is better on a wing...

Some will say action is smoother too...

For a techy gun with gidgets to scare the liberal neighbors id just use an express....for a nice hunting gun, id probably go with a wingmaster.

If you want a gun that is double the cost and scared to get a scratch on it then don't get a wingmaster. I've shot one, really no difference that I could find. They do use quality wood furniture on the Wingmasters.

But if you want a dependable, modable remmy, get the 870, you won't be disappointed! They are beautiful guns. I just got a 870 Super Mag Sythentic for Christmas. My father has the same 870 as me accept his is the wood version and he has had it for a few year's, and I am sure between him and I, we have put a good 3000 shells through her with out a hitch.

Yes, they are great! shot gun's. I say go for the 870 SM and use the money saved to pick up a barrel or two.

I've got an 870 Express but it's 3" not 3.5"

I like it...it's synthetic and the finish is cheaper than a Thai hooker, but it's reliable. 'Cept one time I had a jam that was a super ##### to clear but it worked out okay.

using cheap walmart shells I presume? yes.. they hate that stuff, cheap thin brass on those shells is the culprit there.

eather way you good to go if you get a remington.
Ifyou have the money but the wingmaster.
But not most peopel the express is good enough.
I have 15k in my marine magnum without any issues.

If you owned a Wingmaster 20 years ago and buy a new one today don't be too shocked if the gun is an extreme let down. I have three Wingmasters currently, a 12 and a 20 gauge made in the early 90's and a 28 gauge made in 2002.

The 28 gauge is a shining example of the downward spiral of Remington's production quality. It's a mess of machining marks inside, poorly fitted extractor and a chamber that is undersized among other things.

It was a Winchester "X" silver box 3" magnum slug...I don't know...are those ones considered "cheap?"

Could be a little dirty.

Can't say I've had any troubles with the winchester X. Although it isn't considered premo ammo. I never had a hang up with it. Actually just put a few rounds of that very stuff through my new 870 super mag this morning with out a hiccup. mind you it was the 2 3/4 #6 shot.

Maybe your chamber needs to be honed? a brake hone, "if it is extraction trouble your having" should fix this problem.

If you go to Remingtons site there is a list of FAQs and one of the questions is to do with the difference between the Express and the Wing. Internal parts are the same and quality is supposed to be the same. They are saying the only difference is the quality of the finish and all the parts are interchangeable except where finish applies. Check out the parts breakdown for all the wingmasters. Had one in the late 60s and yes there is a difference but then technology has moved on too. Have a new Express Magnum and looking forward to pushing a lot through it. Hope Im right.

yeah..

That is all I really seen a difference on was the finish and better quality wood used comparing the wood models side by side... Bogie. Awesome shot gun, I have the express super magnum as does my father "fathers we have put ALOT of rounds through" and she's still as good as new. awesome guns, the 870 action is one of the best actions in pump shotguns in the world!
Have fun with your's ;)

870

Couldnt agree more. Had one in the family for over 40 years. The new one is a little different but that may be an update too. Will take it to the range and see how it patterns. Nothing quite like the sound of that pump sliding and grabbing a round. Says serious business all over it. Let you know how it feeds and all-may shoot some trap/skeet if I can arrange it at the range without too big an audience. Been a while since I pulled on a flying object.

I got a Remington Express Combo (with 20" slug barrel) in 20 bore for Christmas. It has the new laminated stock and fore end. This stock is much better looking than the old stained birch ones. The only complaint I have is the way the rib has been machined to reduce glare. It could be used as a saw in a survival situation. Next time you see a new one run your thumb up and down the rib it will surprise you. Other than that a nice little gun with deer capability for under 500.00 bucks. Trigger guard is plastic but some Berettas have plastic trigger guards etc. I am a Wingmaster guy (I own 7 of them) but this is my first express and I am impressed so far. I am taking it out hare hunting this week I will let you know how it works in the field.

Happy New Year, Darryl

I too got me a new 870 Express Super Mag for christmas and I happen to love that new machining they did! I think it look's sweet, and yes that's what it is for. To reduce glare. At first I thought it was for added cooling.

Found a beauty today!

I was fortunate to find an older 870 Wingmaster "Magnum" in 12 gauge today locally for a very good price. It's used, but hard to tell as it looks almost like new. It was $275. I am very pleased with my find! :)
