Does anyone know what the approx. chamber pressure is for 12 gauge, 1 ounce, 2 3/4 dram Remington Gun Club shells. I'm looking for a 6000 psi or less load for a 6.5 pound, older Grulla (Spanish) sxs.

Thanks

Are we all talking LUP or PSI here? Most shotshells(factory) will be of the higher press. variety, usually the lowest is 2 3/4 dr. equiv. which should lower the pressure a bit. Most folks that want to shoot smokeless shells in the old guns reload 1 Oz. shells with 7625 powder and pressures down around 4900LUP. There may be other loads down at that level using other powders but this is a proven combo.

Remington Gun Club loads

Heh Covey Ridge, thanks for the info. Is there a website somwhere that lists pressure ratings for commercial loads?

Ben Hunchak: To be honest, I'm not clear on LUP, what is there conversion for LUP:pSI? It sounds like I should be looking at handloading to get the loads I want. Thanks for the advice on low pressure 1 ounce loads.

The load you asked for is made by Remington using IMR loading components. I refered to IMR loading data. If it is a specific light load for an old firearm that you are looking for, you might ask again in that context. There are m,any on these forums who have such experience.

How old is this Grulla? Spanish smokeless proof has long been established at 12,500-14,000 psi.

My Sarriguarte was proofed at 1000 kp/cm2 = 14,000psi.

If you can't shoot a light target load like you specify in a gun, what use is it?

There's a lot of detail in a thread HERE over at shotgunworld.com. Weiland's book on Spanish shotguns also has a wealth of information on the subject.

low pressure loads

Mu grulla is from the 1970's and was proofed at 900 kp/cm2 (bars), or about 12,600 psi. I took the advice of yourself and Covey Ridge and did some reading in Shotgun World forum archives. It sounds like Spanish gun makers recommend a maximum service pressure of 75% of the proof pressure (about 9,500 psi in the case of my gun). So, I'm being a little over-conservative in limiting my target rounds to 6000 psi, and a probably have more choices than I thought. Thanks for the link.

Remember too its not only the proof pressure but the way the Spaniards test proof that matters. They make excellent guns, especially a company like Grulla.

(pronounced Gru-ya in case you don't know)

Post some photos if you can. Is it a sidelock?

Spanish proof is recognized throughout the EEC. I'd have no worries about using any standard 2-3/4" shells in it.

Mauser Mike, the gun I mentioned is a field grade boxlock. I own a somewhat higher grade Grulla/Union Armera sidelock from the 1950's as well. It is bears a 900 bar proof mark. I'll have to look into how it is done before I can post any photos.
