I'm thinking about drilling and tapping another hole in the rear receiver bridge of a M600 and M660 (later Mohawk) to allow installation of the new breed of two piece bases made for the Model 7 (since 1999). I'm not fond of the appearance of the Weaver #70 so often used.

Has anyone done this specifically with those models? Any issues or advice? Got any favorite ways to mount a scope on one of these little carbines?

I'm thinking of using Leupolds 2pc M7 bases (I checked the contour with the actual bases they seem to match well) or possibly Talley 2pc lightweights. I plan to mount either a Leupold VariX II 1x4 or a 2.5X or a Weaver 2.5x or something similar.

I did this mod on my own Rem M7 before Remington started doing it themselves at the factory. Here's a pic of my pre 99 M7/260 using weaver #35 and #36 bases I seem to remember (yes and with cheap crap rings and scope - temporary has become temporarily permanent I guess).

no need to drill and tap to run two piece bases...at least two piece Weavers....Weaver makes a base that fits the rear bridge and attaches with one screw..I had a set on a M7 in 223.....afterall...a one piece base only uses three screws...and everything is tied together through the scope tube anyway....

Thanks Rembo. I mentioned your idea to a gunsmith friend here in ON tonight and he concurred about just using one screw in the rear mount for the weaver type - even for stout loading the 350RemMag! That suprised me. However I guess I'm yet to like the idea so I don't think I'll try it on my M600andM660 350s. To begin with I will be doing comparison accuracy work when I get them scoped.

The standard Leupold bases for short-action Rem 700--both one-piece and two-piece--will fit the 600 too. I just put one on my .308 mohawk, and it's a perfect fit. I'd bet good $$ that it'll fit a 660 as well.

Are U talking about the standard turn in dovetail and windage adjust mounts or the cross slot/weaver type? Did u put a one piece mount on your Mohawk or the 2 pcs. mounts?

and one with the two piece turn in type (I think they're Redfield rather then Leupold, but the same design).
Is there a second hole custom drilled and tapped in the rear bridge to give support to the windage adjust screws? Or has one screw done the trick?

The single screw seems to do the trick. I haven't had any trouble with the mount shifting, or the scope losing zero. I've been really happy with the single piece Leupold base (the dovetail model), but the two piece should work just as well.
