I have read about the various versions of 870 shotguns and how the older Wingmaster and the police versions are better built and have more QC inspections, etc. compared with the newer Remingtons. How does the marine magnum stack up?

Like all newer Remington products there may be some QC issues but they are getting better compared to just a few years ago. Long story short, the Marine Magnum is still and 870 and even the worst one off the shelf isn't all that hard to get running at 100% capacity/reliability. If you are buying new you can call them up and tell them you are having extraction issues and request they send you a milled extractor to replace the MIM part...sometimes they will sometimes they won't! And in all honesty for the average shooter the MIM part will be a non issue and outlive the shooter anyway!

I bought one in 2002 and sold it in 2012 due only to lack of use/need. I only shot a couple dozen slugs thorough it for practice over the years as well as a bunch of bear-bangers and it always performed flawlessly for me. It was in boats and around sal####er a LOT and as the name suggests, it was up to that kind of abuse. Never showed a speck of corrosion one oxidation.

Agree Dave. Don't have one now but some years back a friend found one in the bottom of a fishing boat he bought and gave it to me. It was there years we figured in water and salt exposure and with just a normal cleaning it worked flawless and also had no rust issues worth discussing
Cheers

I've seen quite a few Marine Magnums around here (commercial gun cleaning is one of my sidelines) where not only are they used in a salt water environment, but they shoot truck loads of corrosive cracker shells in them too, and these guns seem to stand up very well. The only recurring problem I've seen is cracked barrel guides in the receiver when guys who don't know much but think they do, get rough reassembling them. Although I've seen shell stops come loose from their stakes in older, heavily used 870s, I haven't come across a Marine Magnum to suffer from this yet, we'll see what happens once they're 30 years old. While I prefer the Mossberg 590, the Marine Magnum runs a very close second, and at this moment there's more after market stuff out there for it.
