I got my first rimfire rifle last week Rem. 597 in .22LR basic model. I tried/handled other .22’s but liked the 597 the most, I even like the green-grey stock (I’d take it over black if I had an option) it looks and feels nice and handles well. Price is great too (If I got it a month ago would’ve even saved $10) I also find the last shot open bolt feature to be very heandy, I had trouble with bolt/mag release on 10/22...
Before taking it to the range I took it apart to oil/clean the internals as necessary. I brought a bunch of ammo with me, but only shot about 130 rounds (a box of American eagle, CCI Blazer and about 40 rounds of Win. Dynapoints) with NO failure to feed, fire or extract.
I wanted to shoot more, but the gun was shooting a bit high (even at 25yards was about 6in high) the tool I brought to adjust the sight was too small… so decided not to waste any more ammo.
...Glad to hear you're enjoying your 597 IM, and no FTF or extraction issues is a good thing too.
As far as setting up your sights I can't help you there mine came clean [no sights] for scope.
On a typical outing my 597 will see about 150-200 rounds thru her, and if I'm benchrest shooting I will give the barrel a quick swab every 50 rds. If accuracy doesn't matter and I'm just plinking I don't bother with the barrel till I get home.
When I do get home and I'm done for the day I disassemble and clean the action as well as the barrel. Most .22 lr rounds leave alot of filth , especially considering how many rounds you would fire in one sitting versus a center-fire rifle. I'm sure others will chime in on thier cleaning rituals and techniques. Let us know what ammo you find most accurate.
I usually clean my handguns after every range session, but they're pretty easy to take apart...I'll probably clean the barrel after each rage trip and 'poke' it with a Q-tip thu the exection port, maybe even take it apart after 500 rounds if it'll start jamming...
btw I was covering the target with the front sight, so I guess that didn't help shooting high problem...
Finally got a chance to go to the range for the second time today with my 597...
I tested my new Sig first, so only shot 145 rounds;
50 Win. Xpert 36gr --0 problems
25 Fed. 40gr -- 0 problems
20 Fed. 38gr HP -- hammer failed to reset one time
50(49 actually) Rem. Thunderbolt 40gr --2 duds! (1st fired on a second try , 2nd didn’t go off on two more strikes)
There were 0 failures to feed or to extract
Looks like I’m done with Thunderbolts, btw where do write to get my 3.5 cents back?
The rem's are deeeeeerty lil buggers, after a box of 50 it looked the same as 300 CCI mini-mags. Gave up on em cause I don't want to clean the gun every 20 shots . Now they just take up space in the cabinet. Good to hear your having nice results ......keep on
I think I'll tear mine appart again this weekend and clean a few things up, maybe polish the hammer/sear/trigger.
I've had too many "won't fire" scenarios, with different ammo. I want to get this baby up and running for when the snows all gone!!
