I've got a model 7 that is whispering about becoming a .358 Winchester, and I am wondering if anyone on here has been down this road before and how satisfied they are with the end result?
I've been bitten by the desire for a comfortable medium bore, and I'm just weighing my options.

I built one in 358 for my father - worked perfectly, nice compact package. He is a single shot guy, and later found a #1 in 35 whelen so sadly the 358 barrel is now in my loading room, and the action is now wearing a 22-250 pipe.

Stay away from the pencil thin take off barrels that may be available and either put on a new barrel or regular mod 700 take off barrel. Yes, they will fit just fine. If you're lucky the headspace might even be within spec.

Not matter what, it will kick like a mule if loaded to its potential.

Did the stock require any modifications?

Yes. It was originally made for the factory lightweight barrel, and I went to a barrel profile very close to a remington factory magnum profile so the channel had to be opened. No big deal. With the decelerator recoil pad installed it was a pussy cat to shoot.
