Who's got a Model 7?

What do you like or not like about it?

I'm thinking of one in .260 or 7-08, vs. another 700 Mountain Rifle in the same calibres...

Had one in SS. I liked the short. compact portability. At the time I got it you could only get one piece bases, but that is no longer an issue. It was in 7mm-08. I did not like the huge velocity loss of the 20" barrel. i could only manage ~2725fps with 140gr and ~2450 with 160gr. There was a real loss of 50fps/inch in that rifle. Plus, and don't laugh, that little rifle had bite to it. The recoil was quite sharp. I also had a Mountain rifle in .270 Win. I liked it and think the 22" barrel is better in most situations. I was able to coax ~3150fps out of Barnes X 130gr in that one with good accuracy to boot.

I load for a friends Model Seven SS in 308. It's a nice decent rifle, could use a better stock, but it still shoots around 1" for 3 shots with handloads.

Good rifles but like I said I dont like the stocks, they're about a pound heavier than they should be!

20" tube is fine on a 308 Win, still gets 2680 fps with a 165 gr. and 2590 fps with 180 factory loads...

Had one in .308 Win but since I had other rifles in that ctg I sold it to another CGN member who did a custom rebarrel on it...

Still have one in .223 Rem. It came with a 18 1/2" pencil barrel & shot 'okay' but I had it rebarreled with a Rem 700 .223 24" factory take-off barrel. Really like the way it shoots now... 8)

I prefer the Mountain rifle configuration with the 22 inch barrel personally. I just bought my second in 260 remington, great rifles, gre4at calibre, although 7-08 would be just as good. I find the model 7 just a little small and stubby for my taste, while the MR is kind of elegant. I haven't shot the new one yet, (blued /Walnut), but my LSS was spooky accurate with handloads, it would routinely group less than an inch at 200 yards.

Model 7

My Model 7 SS in 308 has become one of my best user guns. It is short and rugged and a dream to carry all day long. I've bought and sold many guns over the years, mountain rifles included, and just can't seem to part with that little Model 7.

It is half the price of a Sako Finnlight and as long as you let that pencil barrel cool between shots, will give tight patterns from the bench at 100 and 200 yards. Mine loves the regular 180 grain Core-Lokts. I thought the 20 inch barrel would lose too much velocity at 200 yards but that was not the case. I'm shooting an honest 1.5 inch group at 100 yards. (2 inches above bullseye.) I then shoot an honest sub 3 inch group at 200 yards. (1 inch below bullseye.) It is a great all around hunting gun, especially if you walk alot and shoot a little.

I just fired a newly acquired Model Seven stainless in 260 yesterday....Three shot groups at 100 meters were about 1" to 1-1/4", my friend pulled the targets, I'll get them back tomorrow....then a 3 shot group at 200 meters went 1.485".....I was impressed. This was with factory 140 Core Loct loads  This was with no bedding of the plastic stock and the factory bumps in the foreend.Only a trigger adjustment to 3#....this one might be a keeper.....but I've said that before

I have shot deer with 21 different guns in my time and I have had some good ones
I had last year a custom Rem 700 with Hart barrel and It is amazing gun but I would sell it, but I would never sell my .308 Rem Model 7 it is the nicest gun I have ever hunted with, I put a 16o/z stock on it this year and its even better, painted a nice black cherry colour, and it weighs 6lbs 7oz with a 1.75 to 6x Leupold, with a dot # 3 from Premier Retecals, with 44grs of 4064 and 150gr speer hot cors it shoots well under 1" for a 18.5 " barrel what more could you expect, so eaasy to carry.

Excellent hunting gun. If your looking for a gun that will shoot 1-2 inches at 100 yards and sub 3" at 200 yards then this gun is for you. What makes the model 7 a great hunting gun to me is it's light weight and short 20" barrel. My cousin has one in 308.SS I like it as much as he does. Wish I had one. Anyways, one draw back..? tall people could find the model 7 may feel a little too small. I have the Winchester Classic Compact in 308. I also find this gun to be a good choice for people who walk alot and shoot a little. hi Art :!:

..........and did it turn out nice! Bill Leeper put a 20" Shilen tube in 358 Winchester on it, and it is a sweetheart. :D

I am thinking of taking my Model 7 to Harts and have them put on a 20" or so in 7mmwsm but I don't think I would be able to handle recoil as my Rem 700 with 24" Hart weighs 71/2lbs with scope and 68grs of 4831 has quite a bit of recoil. what do you think?

i have a model sevin in 7rsum and the recoil is okay but it weighs almost a lb more than one in a non magnum calibre. other than the crappy plastic stock its a nice rifle. scoped with 6x 42 luep. i don't know if the model 7 can be cambered for wsm as its a longer case annd the mag lenth on the seven is quite short. the bullet would be seated very deep cutting powder capasity and most likely velosity too. rsum would be a better choice

The mag length of the Model Seven is the same as the short 700 at about 2.83" or thereabouts,..Remington chambers the short 700 SPS in 300WSM, so it will fit...although I think the SAUM's are a little better fit.
