Looking into purchasing my first rifle in the next week. All my other rifles have been hand downs.

Also, since this is my first rifle purcahse- what questions should I be asking the gun shop? I tried searching for questions people ask when purchasing a rifle but couldnt find anything.

I have narrowed it down to the remington model 700. Fits best into my shoulder and feels comfortable while dry firing. There are 3 models I've narrowed it down to and was wondering if anyone had some good info about them:

SPS Stainless: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_SPS_Stainless.asp

SPS DM: http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_SPS_DM.asp

Go with the 700 SPS DM. Nice weight, 24" barrel, detachable magazine, nice bolt, and accurate. And for under $600, it's definitely a good buy.

Which calibre do you have in mind.

I think you may need to state your intended purpose for the rifle. If you're looking for a precision shooter, you could make better choices from the 700 line up. The 700 SPS Tactical seems to hold some favour as a cost effective reasonably accurate rifle. As a hunting piece you've chosen a couple decent units but are in the wrong forum, head over to the Hunting and Sporting Arms group a couple places down the list.

I myself own the 700 SPS DM in .30-06 as a hunting rifle and am quite pleased with the performance for the dollar spent. Would I consider it a precision tool, no way, but it shoots well for what it is.

Thanks, I forgot to add it's for a mix of competition and hunting. But mostly competition.

I haven't quite decided on a calibre yet. But am leaning towards a .308 or a 30-06.

"...mostly competition..." Neither of those models are target rifles. The thin barrel will heat up quickly. They're the same hunting rifle made with different materials. However, go with the .308. Use 168 grain match bullets out to 600 yards, 175 grain match bullets past 600 and 165 grain hunting bullets with IMR4064 or Varget.
