Looks like Rem is jumping into the SOCOM trials in a big way.

Wonder how they are going to change bolt heads and barrels in the field?

Very interesting....

The link is to the military supply website so odds are not good that an export friendly version will be available.

MP, the Savage will allow you to change barrels in a few minutes :)

Same with the bolt heads.

I was hoping to see a close up of the action to see how they intend to achieve these feats. Will see what comes out in the gun mags.

A couple of things I didn't like. The stock has way too much stuff that can snag on a crawl. Something more enclosed like the Magpul AR stock would offer the same adjustment with none of the problems.

Also, why is the western world obsessed with folding to the right? This makes the rifle short yes but also inoperable.

Why not fold to the left and you can still run the rifle in a SHTF moment- like jumping out of a vehicle?

Extra engineering/labour went into making the hole fit the bolt handle AND weakening this part.

Again, they have failed to make these rifles lighter. Some variants tip the scale at 17lbs. That is alot of weight to drag around the countryside. With the use of so much 'hitech' why not throw in some better and lighter engineering and get these rifles into the 10lbs range.

There are few chassis type stocks which would allow you to build a similar rig off a Rem. A combination of features from tube rifles and chassis stocks and this rifle would easily be replicated.

As to costs, none were printed but I expect they will want AI/SAKO/SIG type money.

Thanks for the info Jerry!

I have been dreaming of a reasonably light weight chassis/tube gun system for some time.....Surely someone can build a 10-11 pound complete rifle on a in a chassis platform.

I bet Remington cheaps out and builds it too heavy though.

IMHO the switch barrel thing is over-rated.

Because no one wants to get hit in the schnoz by the stock hinge. I got that with some breed of side-folding AK a few years back. Stupid hinge just rattled against my nose as I shot it. Very freaky sensation. Not enough to make it bleed, but wierd nontheless.

Not only that, but a big metal hinge beside your face is a big problem when it is cold, or in conditions of condensation. I had a stage 2 AICS for a while, and it was a big pain in the a$$ when it was cold. Nice big piece of freezing metal right beside of and in front of your teeth.

Not sure how a hinge pin by the grip could affect your nose. As for the cold part, welcome to alloy. A layer of plastic, rubber or fabric would get rid of that issue quickly.

"All in a package less then 18lbs..."

Why not say 12lbs? If they did this ALL entrants would meet this weight range with ease and still offer the same level of performance. There is little need for heavy in this day and age.

And if I must carry '18lbs' of firearm, I would rather it be extra ammo, food/water or a fighting rifle.

If someone can explain to me, the US army is going full throttle on these AR10 type 308 sniper rigs. What role would this Rem serve?

I can appreciate the need for more muscle to engage at longer distances BUT this Rem is offered in a 308? Also, the AR10 type rifle can house a magnum 7, 30 and possibly 338. Wouldn't that serve the same role?

To me it sounds like a fair amount of duplication.

An RFP is expected on this solicitation any day that will involve exhaustive testing. We have been online with this project since the YUMA Doppler trials several years ago. The pre-solicitation link noted above will have been changed dramatically based on industry input and meetings that took place.

The Remington MSR does indeed show a strong commitment from them however I do not believe the RFP will call for a switch caliber system.

The folding stock 338 we have in the safe is 13.75lbs with day and night sight rail and magazine...

I tried that sort of thing with the AICS2. It was close to my face to begin with, and closer when I started adding things. In the end, I just did not think it was worth the weight.

I read the link to be <=18lbs loaded, scoped, and ready to go. 12lbs at those distances, with that accuracy would likely lose on the drop tests. Might be possible though.
