Which is more accurate out of the box? There seems to be a lot of polarization when it come down to these two brands.

...tuff call..I would guess its to close to call.....I have had Savages and Remington's that would both shoot well under 3/4MOA

Savgae is cheaper,Remington feels better..

if you are talking more accurate out of the box, SAVAGE it is, remington 700 is nice, but it cost you more, I`m buying a savage 12BVSS, shot it once really loved it.

Savage, no question. Unfortunately they're also ugly as hell and use lots of el cheapo components--see: plastic 'teardrop' safety, tupperware stocks, bolted on bolts, cheap springs and mag components, etc. etc.. Kinda like if the fastest production car in the world was a Smart Car. Wouldn't you still buy a Mustang and soup it up, even if it cost you more and maybe wasn't _quite_ as fast at the end of the day?

50/50. Some Savages will have the advantage, some Remingtons. Bang for the buck award certainly goes to the Savage

Well said Obtunded. A Savage 10FP vs. a Remington 710? The Savage, no question. A cheap Savage (don't know any cheap Savage's) vs. a Remington 40-XS? Hands down the Remington.
I can't comment on how well a Remington 700 shoots out of the box, but with a bedding and trigger job, I can say it shoots pretty darned well (I haven't had much opportunity to do proper grouping tests at 100m, but when I was shooting at 280m in the bush, the smallest grouping was about 1.2" [Winchester whitebox ammo, a bit windy, off a bipod]).

Out of the box, there is no question that the savage will be the better shooter.
I have a friend who purchased a 300 ultra in a 700 sps for christmas. Anyone who thinks that savages are cheap looking had better take a peek at this little number!! I have a 700 in 243 that is about 14 years old, it is a good looking rifle, works great and I like it very much. It will not shoot with my savage though!
The savage company really has been giving what the customer has been asking for lately. The accutrigger, like it or not is a step in the rite direction. What about the rite bolt left port offering? I also understand that for 2007 they will be offering a 223 in a 1 in 7 twist, a 22-250 in a 1 in 9 twist and rumour has it a 6.5x284 chambering!
The aftermarket has been following suit as well for many upgrades for the savage.(I also understand that this has been a very good reason in the past to buy a remington). The ability of the average joe to purchase headspace gages and a barrel of a diffrent caliber and swap it at home is a truly great asset and money saver!
I do beleive that you cant go wrong with a remmy, however I do beleive that the savage is the better choice(and more accurate). In my opinion it is the small block chevy of the rifle world! Good luck with your choice,
Cdog.

Remington or Savage

I own 2 Rem 700 "police" and they both shoot great. (1/3 moa) All I did to the 308 (LH) is rechamber the 20 inch bbl to "match" I also have a palma 28 in. bbl with match chamber. The other is a RH. Came in 22-250. added a Gaillard 28 in. barrel in 260 Rem for 350$. A chamber job is 200$. well worth it.
I used the 308 at two Palma matches in Albany NY (800, 900 & 1000 yds) and got my share of Xs. Did a sniper match in TX last year also.
I glass bedded the 260 with a friend (20$ job for the marine tex epoxy)
I know the Savages shoot great too. I even saw they came out with a detach mag on some models. Someone told me they have centerline feed. I'm looking into that. They didn't have any at "Sail" my local gun store when I went today. Their buyer is at the SHOT show in florida now. When he comes back they will get them in. The model is 14 I believe (hunting rifle) As soon as I know more I will post the info. A hi-cap mag would be great. I have 6 shot mag extensions on both Rems (18$ At Brownell's)
What I don't like about the Rem 700s is they come with a throat which is way too far. I loaded the 155 SMKs at 2.95 touching lands. The mag OAL is 2.80.
Bummer! My match chamber is touching at 2.80 for the 155 SMKs and 2.84 for the 10 gram Lapua Scenars (154gr) I don't know what the Savage is like but if they make a centerline feed mag it soundls like smoother feeding.
I tried a Sig Blaser 93R LRS2 in 6mmBR lately and that is centerline feed on top of being a straight push-pull action. Smoothest thing I ever tried if you can afford it. I don't see why it's so important to be good out of the box. You get what you pay for. Any serious shooter that wants his rifle to shoot better will get something done on it (match chamber, truing action, glass beding and/or pillar bedding the action) The match chamber is the best improvement for your money. There's no free lunch. Don't forget to get a good piece of glass. As much bucks as the rifle price if you can. I have a 10X S&B on my 308 and it's not money thrown out the window I assure you.

Good shooting all.
