Remington R1

Ive got one, good standup 1911 that'll handle well, is accurate, and has decent fit and finish for the price. Not as smooth as the $2500 wilson combats of course, but its hard to tell the $500 R1 from the $1500 colt gold cups in terms of reliability and accuracy. Just my opinion, of course. Find a friend or a range who has one and test fire it.
 
Just got back from the range having done some IPSC drills with one of my R1's. Finished up plinking the 100m 18" x 24" gong - duck soup!

If you can get a better gun for the outlay - go for it! Especially if it's your first 1911. Use the money saved to buy ammo and other goodies. You'll soon learn if you need or want more in a gun. If you want more, look at the R1 Carry. It has all the bells, gongs & whistles.

I swapped an R1 in SS for a second blued model. The SS rattled as it had a sloppy slide-to-frame fit. Too bad, as I liked the look. This one has an even better trigger pull out of the box than the first.
 
I have had my R1 Enhanced for about a year. Great gun if you like the enhanced features - fibre optic front sight, adjustable rear novak, extended mag release, extended thumb safety, and checkered mainspring and grip safety bump. 2 8 round mags.

As far as craftsmanship, you have 3 choices for American made 1911s for under $1000 - Ruger SR1911, STI Trojan, and Rem R1. I own an SR1911 too and IMO the Ruger is a better deal being stainless. Please note I have yet to shoot my SR1911 so I can only compare build quality and finish. If I can recall, the Ruger is tighter slide fit than the Rem new. After about 1000 rounds the R1 still feels the same but smoother. R1 trigger feel is better and lighter even as series 80 vs the SR's series 70. The SR's is slide is tighter and not as smooth but that may be lack of wear.


I really like the R1 Carry 5" but for the money that is Kimber territory from a mass production company, not worth it IMO.
 
I owned the R1 Enhanced for a fair while and shot the heck out of it until my bank account deemed that I couldn't afford .45 any more. The gun was very accurate, very reliable with factory ammunition, and the fit and finish on the pistol was very good for the price you pay for it.
 
I bought one after having several salesmen discount it as junk for being none other than a Remington product. Of course, they all had their personal favorites.

I went against the grain and bought my R1 anyway. Well, nearly one carton of American Eagle later, and it is shooting flawlessly and smoooth! It is an awesome product. Buy extra mags and have some serious fun!

Very sturdy platform and I am very pleased with my decision to ignore the prejudiced advice of some others.
 
Unlike the one gent on here that never misses the chance to point out he had a bad experience with 1 Remington R1 in stainless, i bought on and am thrilled with it. This is my 3 rd 1911 currently in the safe and by far my favorite. The slide feels like it rides on teflon ball bearings, fit and finish is unbelievable for the price range and it is accurate beyond ANY Gold Cup i have ever shot. Plus the trigger is incredible. It was amazing out of box but i did some fine polishing and pulled the series 80 parts and it is like custom.

I cant say enough good about it.
