I went to the range today and my buddy let me try his new Remington XR-100 Rangemaster in 22-250. A very nice rifle but I had a problem. I had loaded a round, and placed the safety on and had the barrel pointed downrange. When I took the safety off, the rifle fired. I tried to duplicate this again with an already fired shell, but the only way I could get it to do it was if I had my finger resting 'oh so gently' on the trigger as I took the safety off. The trigger was set at about 31/2 to 33/4 lb.

So, has anyone else done this or is this a common thing? I know I should not have my finger on the trigger when moving the safety to off, but with this thumbhole stock, my finger just automatically seems to fit in the trigger guard. I really can't even feel any trigger pressure and it fires when moving off safety! Is this just me? Do I have the problem or is this an overly sensitive safety or is it just plain unsafe? Help me out as up to this point I was considering buying one for myself.

SOme Remingtons had the problem you describe- They woudl fire when the safety was disengaged, without any trigger pressure. I beleive it was when the trigger group got dirty, but I am no t sure on that.

In your case, you are probably putting some small pressure on the tirgger as you switch to fire and BOOM.

Although, I had the very same thing happen to me with a Remington. I could sear that my finger wasn't on the trigger, but I must have brushed it somehow.

The way to cure you of this is dry fire. Practice cocking the bolt and removing the safety with an empty gun. Every time you hear a click you know you ####ed up again. Really, your finger shouldnt' be anywhere near the trigger when you take the safetly off. That is just basic safe handling...

IIRC the XR-100 is based on the Rem 600 action, which had some problems with exactly the misfire problem you're describing. It's rare, difficult to reproduce, but definitely real.

If the trigger is pressed at all while the safety is engaged, the rifle may fire when the safety is disengaged, even if the trigger is no longer being touched.

We have duplicated that in a buddy's 600.
