What is the difference between all the Remington semi-auto rifle models?? I have seen the: 7400, 740, 742, 750, all with names like the Woodsmaster and Sportsman.

I need a good used semi-auto in .30/06 for deer and moose, which one should I be targeting? Thanks

I would go with a 7400 or newer they are the latest models and upgrades something to do with the bolt locking lugs.

I have a 30-06 7400 synthetic stocked carbine that I had Shane @ Reliable Gun & Tackle in Vancouver (they are a Rem warranty store) tune it up for me it now functions flawlessly with ever load I put thru it.

I had some load issues to begin with but you need a small base resizing die for these semi-autos once I switched to it I had no further issues.

I have seen many slam these rifles when it is actually the ammo that is the problem.

It is going up for sale on the exchange soon I just don't need it anymore and it is now a safe queen pm me if you are interested in seeing a pic.

The 740 742 series had multible locking lugs on the bolt. With time the lugs would imprint themselves into the receiver area at full rearward movement of the bolt. Soon after that starts the lugs would actually lock into the imprints that same way they locked into the barrel extension. Usually can be fixed once then they are junked. The 7400 750 series seem to have some issues that cam mosly be written off to being poorly cleaned. I have a 750 Woodsmaster carbine in .35 Whelen I keep it clean and it has never jammed. I have about 200 rounds through it at this point. Just an extra note alot of jams are also caused by magazines.

cheers Darryl

Similar expeience as madtrapper ... owned a 742 in 308 ... never failed on me once ... sold it to a guy I work with because I went to a 35 Whelen pump -
I asked him this winter, when I saw him last ... no, the old .308 has never missed a beat. From "day one" (we) only fed it Remington 180 SP's (Round Nose) ... About 8 years for me, both moose & deer seasons - maybe 250 rounds ... and another 15 for him ... deer seasons every year since.

I have a 7400 in .270 win. She likes three things, or she doesn't want to work. (Likes to jam up)

1. Clean. I mean really clean (after a day of hunting without firing a shot, I strip and cleaner her).

2. Remington Ballistic tip (140 grains, I think)

3. Winchester Power Point (In the totally silver box).

I like the way the 7400 balances and if kept clean, it's a good gun

Remington supplys an offset chamber brush with it's new rifles. This brush makes all the difference in the world to increase reliability in 7400 750 series rifles. If you do anything at the end of the day make sure you sweep the chamber with that brush. It works well. If you have not fired the rifle I don't think the brushing would be required.

cheers Darryl

+1 on the Browning. There's a reason why the Remington is nicknamed the

Jam-o-matic.

You will hear more bad things about Rem semis than good IMO.The thing is do you want a gun that is iffy at best!

I use to buy up a few Win 94s before every hunt to sell to the guys who had their Remingtons fail them during the hunt.I got rid of the 30-30s every year at a bit of a profit, and the dissatisfied Remington guys had a reliable gun for the rest of the hunt.

All by guys like yourself that have heard, or "know a guy"
Its funny, they guys that all own one, (myself included) all conclude that if you keep it clean, and feed it good ammo, they dont jam often, or ever.
Mine has FTF (Failed to Feed) twice, and both was shooter error. Most people arent use to a 2lb trigger on a 7400, and the gun has been shot twice by shooters that did not have the rifle cradled fully into their shoulder, and caused a FTF.
You cant blame an autopistol if the shooter is limpwristing it. Besides that, it just doesnt hiccup.
One of the times was a guy on this site.
My only issue with the gun is it dings the mouth of the brass when it cycles empties. It doesnt hurt the brass, its just a pet peeve.
Here is a question.
Do you blame GMC if your motor pops at 150K, and you've never changed the oil? Poor maintenance = Poor function regardless of the tool. Ammo included.

Some designs are less inclined to fail (like an SKS, or AK)
But all sporting semi's will fail if not maintained.

i would not buy a semi auto rifle.
next time around the liberals will outlaw all semi auto guns in private hands.
confiscation without compensation is the wod of the day!
and yes, they will win an election based on a gun-restricting policy.

I had one 742 out of about ten 742s,7400s that was trouble free.I also had four Browning BARs that all worked flawlessly, and all these rifles got the same treatment in the cleaning department. So I would say from experience the BAR is a far better unit.

Good plan.

Maybe you should sell everything and buy single shots, that way you'll have a better chance of not losing anything w/o compensation. Vote Liberal while you're at it. :bangHead:

.

After 40 some years of hunting I have never seen a semi that didnt give some kind of trouble,be it shotgun or rifle.Bolt action, make your shots count, and you will have alot more fun.

That's the defeatist attitude that puts smiles on the antis faces.

If you think they will stop at semis your crazy, just like Australia once the semis are gone pumps are next.
Then soon you will have only single shot bolt guns, or worse.

The Remington 7400, then later a 742 Woodsmaster I had both worked great, and shot well. How about this one?
